Robert Connolly
graduated from AFTRS in 1994 and became a partner in the independent
production company Arenafilm. His feature film credits as Producer
include THE BOYS and THE MONKEY'S MASK. He most recently wrote and
directed THE BANK, winning an AFI Award for Best Original Screenplay.
This Masterclass
will begin with a showing of THE BANK followed by a talk where Robert
will discuss the creative process from the original idea through
screenplay development to financing, casting, directing and
production through to post production and the national and
international release.
Rarely in the
process of film making do we see an individual maintain creative and
managerial control every step of the way.

Service presents: Above the Line Productions
Seven short
films by the youth of Byron Shire
6.30pm 7 May

Byron Youth
Service has been running a ten-week intensive film-making course and
11 young people ranging from 15 to 22 have produced the seven short films.
Come and view
short films produced by local young artists. Patrons are guaranteed
laughter and tears as they move through the variety of film genres
presented. Due to film content the recommended age of patrons is 16
years and over unless accompanied by a consenting adult.

THE NEW BOOTS is a new local short film based on
an award winning short story by local writer and artist John
Campbell. Campbell and writer/director Tristan Bancks adapted the
story to screenplay form. THE NEW BOOTS is produced by Lois Randall
and Terie-Lea Tobin and features hot young Australian film star Luke
Carroll who was nominated for an AFI award for his performance in
AUSTRALIAN RULES.
THE NEW BOOTS will be filmed from 8-12 June 2003 and will feature
locations throughout the region. The film looks set to premiere at
the Byron Bay Writers' Festival in August. Current sponsors include
Chris Condon, Cosimodo Costume Design, Wicked Weasel, Ed Silk Real
Estate, Bay Dendy, La La Land, Byron Stunning Stays, Byron Bay
Writer's Festival, Michael Illenberger (Dairy Farmers), Late Nite
Video and Screenworks.
May is the month
for NEW BOOTS filmy fundraising events:
- Saturday
10 May at Federal Hall. Reel Films Screening of Jean
Renoir's La Grande Illusion. $10 entry and $7-$8 for delicious French
food offered before the film. All food sales go towards THE NEW BOOTS
budget.
- Friday
16 May from 8pm, right after the Screenworks event,
come for drinks at La La Land. $7 entry includes your first drink and
finger food. La La Land is donating door money to THE NEW BOOTS
budget.
- Friday
23 May, 7pm at Bay Dendy, THE NEW BOOTS presents the
graduating short films from the AFTRS. Entry is $12 / $9.50 and a
percentage of door proceeds goes toward THE NEW BOOTS. We would
really love your support for this local film
production!
FACE TO
FACE is the new film from local documentary maker Cathy
Henkel. The film is now in post-production and will be launched on
4 July at an international human rights conference
being held in Byron Bay.
This documentary
tracks the filmmaker's journey to
Johannesburg, city of her birth, to find and confront the man who
committed a savage crime against her mother.

FLYING IN A DREAM
will be shot slowly over this year - some Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays
and uni holidays on location in Bangalow, Byron and
Ewingsdale.

TORONTO Hot Docs' fourth annual international market, the TDF,
scheduled for April 30 and May 1 during the Hot Docs film festival
has been re-organised, due to the cancellation of its international
broadcaster and producer participants.

LOS ANGELES A federal judge in Los Angeles has ruled companies that
provide software that enables online film and music file sharing
should remain in operation.
50TH
SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL, 6-20 JUNE 2003
The Sydney Film Festival has just announced the finalists in the 2003
Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films. All 18 finalists will be
screened on Friday 6 June, the festival's opening day, at the State
Theatre from 9am to 5:45pm with the announcement of winners in each
category at the end of the day. Tickets are just $22 for the whole
day.
In celebration of
the 50th Anniversary, the Sydney Film Festival will also screen a
retrospective program of winners and finalists from the 34 years of
the Australian Short Film Awards, called BRIGHT SPARKS. This program
includes the first recipient of the prestigious Rouben Mamoulian
Award, Castor and Pollux, awarded in 1974 to a young Phil
Noyce.
