Have you ever loved a child? Do you want to give a child the best chance at life? Do you want to make television that gets an audience of over 2.5 million people?
Then
Screenworks invites you to a masterclass with Catherine Marciniak
(Northern Rivers based documentary maker and the
Director/Cinematographer) of Life at 1.
Life at 1
is the first instalment in a landmark cross-platform series that aims
to unlock the secrets of child development as it follows 11 Australians
from their first year of life. It takes intimate and compelling stories
of what it is to be a child and a parent in contemporary Australia and
blends this with the scientific findings of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children.
The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC)
is the most ambitious scientific study ever conducted on our children.
Life at 1 harnesses the behavioural and biological data collected from
the 10,000 children and families in LSAC, to explore what every parent
wants to know – what does it take to give a child the best chance at
life.
Join us for an exploration of this ambitious television
project that follows Australia's youngest generation on the greatest
journey of all - LIFE.
"The
Life Series" is a Film Australia National Interest Program project,
produced in association with Heiress Films, for ABC Television.
Catherine will be joined by MC, Kerry Sunderland.
Door Prize sponsored by Film Australia: A family themed DVD documentary pack of LIFE AT 1, DIVORCE STORIES, OPERATION BABYLIFT and others.

FFC INVESTMENT GUIDELINES INDUSTRY CONSULTATIONS When: Thursday 26 April 2007, 4 to 6pm Where: Screenworks Deck Cost: FREE RSVP: Karolina Lipiec at kal@ffc.gov.au Refreshments provided.
The Film Finance Corporation
will hold an open meeting on 26 April for industry stakeholders at
Screenworks offices in Bangalow, to discuss the FFC’s investment
guidelines for 2007/08.
The consultations will be an opportunity to discuss:
Feature Films
- the progress of the FFC’s two-door evaluation/market attachment system for financing features
- the marketing of Australian feature films
- a children’s feature film in 2007/08
Documentary
- investment guidelines for the domestic door for documentary in 2007/08
Funding Rounds
- are the funding rounds introduced in 2006/07 working for producers?
Government Review
- a chance to discuss the proposals put forward through the review. How might a production rebate work?
Domestic Door for Documentary The three selection criteria for the domestic door in case of competition are: i. series vs one-offs ii. balance of emerging and experienced filmmakers iii. diversity of subject matter
The FFC would like to discuss a co-financing process with the broadcasters as an alternative to the current guidelines for the domestic door:
- With
$1 million available for the domestic door at each funding round, a
single broadcaster could be attached to projects with a maximum of
$500,000 ask on the FFC per round. There would be no cap on the number
of projects per broadcaster.
- Broadcasters to pay a minimum of 50 per cent licence fee per domestic door project.
- Where
a producer brings third-party finance to a project, it can be used to
reduce the FFC and the broadcaster amount to an equal percentage below
the 50 per cent, or to enhance the budget (above the FFC cap).
- The
FFC would retain discretion in terms of the overall diversity of the
annual slate and the balance of experienced and emerging
personnel.
DEVELOPMENT PRODUCER CLINICS When: Last Friday of the month Where: 1/12 Byron Street Bangalow, entry at rear via Deacon Street Cost: $35 + GST/ 1 hour session Next Clinic: 27 April 2007 Got a great idea for the screen, but what's next? Each

and television markets. Appointments are confidential, conducted

encouraged to email any possible briefing material in advance in order
to maximise the consultation opportunity. To be considered for an

“My meeting was incredible. I have never met a more positive person in
my life. Thanks for letting me be a part of it.” “I'd just like to
thank-you for all your direction and support for the further
development and improvement of my show.”
EAST OF EVERYTHING Bangalow
and Screenworks may be West of Byron, but we are fully into all things
East of Everything. The locally generated series East of Everything
was launched in alfresco style on the Screenworks deck with speeches by
Ex Tweed member, Neville Newell, writer and co producer, Deb Cox and
writer and associate producer Roger Monk. The series has been
commissioned by ABC television, and is being produced by Fiona Eagger
through her company Twenty 20 Pty Ltd.
There is much to
celebrate about this production, not least it’s truly local roots and
use of cast and crew. In the coming months we will reveal all, from
interviews with cast and crew to anecdotes from the set during
production, and even the odd image.
TRICKS OF THE TRADE: AIDC DEBRIEF Cheryl McMaster A small but appreciative group gathered last Thursday evening at the Screenworks office for the first of the Tricks of the Trade events for the year. Introductions
over, we settled down for an informal chat about the good, and not so
good, of the recent Australian International Documentary Conference
held in Adelaide. Catherine Marciniak led the discussion with six of
the local film makers who attended the conference keen to share their
stories and experiences. Topics ranged from strategies for Documart,
personal experiences of MeetMarket, reversioning for international
markets as well as the exciting new Documentary Australia initiative.
The importance of meeting with buyers and commissioning editors face to
face and building relationships with these people, was reinforced
throughout the evening. We heard how the buzz around this year’s
conference -climate change - was in part due to one of our local film
makers talking about her latest project. At the moment, there is not
enough market ready content out there to satisfy demand. There
were war stories to share. One film maker found herself in the
unenviable position of having a three piece band strike up behind her
as she was pitching to a buyer. Other stories included missed
appointments and being matched with an arts editor when pitching a
science project. The final night event of the AIDC conference was
a barbecue held at the Adelaide Bowls Club. We all commended a local
‘emerging senior film maker’ for her choice of bowling partners for the
night which included David Jowsey (ABC) and the inspirational Roger
Graef (CEO, Films of Record, UK). Participating in the “Tricks of
the Trade – AIDC Debrief” allowed me to not only revisit and share my
experience of the conference, but also to build on it. I highly
recommend both events to all documentary film makers.
ACHIEVEMENTS, AWARDS, ACCOLADES LIFE AT 1 NOMINATED FOR A LOGIE AWARD Between
now and May 6, local documentary maker, Catherine Marciniak, will be on
the hunt for a new frock. Her documentary series "Life at 1" has been
nominated for a Logie in the category of Most Outstanding Documentary.
But before we see her walk down the red carpet onto the Logie stage,
"Life at 1" has to beat some pretty stiff competition. Other
nominations in this category are: "The Battle of Long Tan", "The Bridge
at Midnight Trembles", "The Floating Brothel" and "Who Killed Dr Bogle
and Mrs Chandler?".
Congratulations and Good Luck to
Catherine, Jennifer Cummins (Producer) and the "Life at 1" team from
Screenworks. Screenworks also congratulates Film Australia. Three of
the five documentaries nominated were produced under the Film Australia
National Interest Program.
Catherine Marciniak is the Series Director and Principal Cinematographer of "Life at 1". "The
Life Series" is a Film Australia National Interest Program documentary
project, produced in association with Heiress Films, for ABC
Television.
