Masterclass Take One
Jaime Browne delivered an inspiring session for short filmmakers last month. 20 people heard Jaime speak about his experiences at VCA and the technicalities of making short film. There was great value for local participants, with Jamie giving the grass roots approach to production, networking, using what is available, sourcing funding, materials, actors etc.

New office
Screenworks now has a fabulous new office – Suite 5/95 Jonson Street, Byron Bay. Our phone number is 66809220. We are located opposite Woolworths, above the Oz Bakehouse. Entrance is via the rear. Make an appointment to speak with us or call by for a look at what is happening.

We will be looking at establishing a resource library for practitioners and there is ample space for people to convene production meetings if required (bookings are required). We have a Macintosh platform and are setup with a laser printer – so if you have a film proposal or presentation to get together, you may wish to use this setup. Bring your own paper and please note, we can’t offer computer support.

Working hours for Deb, Kate and Dallas are part-time as follows:
Kate: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
Deb: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
Dallas: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Office is open 10am.

Launch
Screenworks opens its doors on Friday 16 May from 6-8pm. Join us to celebrate and launch our vision: to establish the Northern Rivers as an internationally recognised regional centre for the screen industries. Meet the staff, Board of Directors and other Screenworks friends - and familiarise yourself with the new office. This new phase is an exciting development for the Northern Rivers Region and your contribution and participation is welcomed and encouraged. See you there!

Location Liaison Officer
Due to personal reasons the Location Liaison Officer, Harry Yates, resigned his position with Screenworks. A second round of interviews was conducted and we would like to welcome, Dallas Nock to the position. Dallas has extensive experience in the film and television industry. He has worked as Location Manager in the region for the past 9 years and has also worked on set as a stills photographer, 2nd unit director and taken on various roles in the art department. Prior to moving to the Northern Rivers, Dallas worked in Sydney for 10 years as a Location Scout. His experience includes commercials, television, film and documentaries. As well as working with Screenworks, Dallas teaches video production and editing at Southern Cross University.

To date Screenworks has provided:

  • location stills pitching for 3 feature films and one television series
  • local produce information for an ABC / BBC television cooking program
  • conducted a tour for visiting Documentary Conference delegates of local production facilities
  • assisted the NSW Film and Television Office plan a regional tour of television commercial producers to be held in May
  • made initial contacts with Councils regarding establishing a filming protocol for the region

Strategic Planning Day
Thankyou to all the people who attended and contributed to the planning session. Valuable input was received into the goals and priorities for Screenworks. At the end of the session, each participant was able to vote – their 4 key priorities (stars) and their 1 burning priority (dots). To access the day's work http: www.screenworks.com.au/news.htm#5. Note this is the unsorted output from the day’s brainstorming sessions. Have your say and email us at kate@screenworks.com.au  - send us your 4 key priorities and 1 burning priority. This document will now be streamlined into a succinct outline of Screenworks goals and priorities with an action plan and clear targets. Watch this space and we would welcome your input at this early stage of the process.

Facilities and services
Do you provide production facilities or services for the film/television/new media industries? We need to know about you here at Screenworks. Please send your promotional materials to the office at PO Box 965, Byron Bay. Help us promote you!

Resource library
Screenworks office is in the process of establishing a resource library that is available to all. If people have back copies of screen journals, magazines and books they are willing to donate, we would welcome them.

Volunteers
This is a call for anyone interested in volunteering. Please phone or email us, info@screenworks.com.au  and register your name. We will then conduct a meeting of all interested in the very near future.

And the really good news is...
“I was contacted by Granada Productions after my name was put forward by Screenworks and subsequently I was offered the position of Photographers Assistant on the US reality TV series, ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!’ It was an amazing experience to be involved in, such a huge production with a crew of over 400 people from all over Australia and the world, and to observe the logistics of such a production. I have subsequently been offered work as an Assistant Editor on the UK series of the same show, with the possibility of further series throughout the year. Thank you Screenworks for creating this opportunity for me.” Cath McKay.
