| SEASONS GREETINGS FROM SCREENWORKS | |
|
|
To all
Screenworks subscribers and supporters, our thanks. Have a wonderful
Christmas and new year and we look forward to seeing you in the coming
year.
A quick year in
review. This year Screenworks ran four masterclasses, 14 seminars and
eight clinics, presenting a range of topics from script to composing,
web casting, online social networking through to exhibition,
distribution and funding. We have just completed the highly successful
MediaWorks workshop with feedback such as “it was the most relevant,
CURRENT, empowering and functional media related program I have ever
attended” and “excellent course. We were given a lot of information
very relevant to our work and projects”.
Screenworks
matched writers with mentors through the Script Incubator program and
producers with mentors through the recent Producers' Incubator. We held
the annual Pitch’n’Punt with training provided again by Sandy George
and the winner Kamahl Druesne went on to pitch at SPAA Fringe.
On the locations
front, we’ve been negotiating with councils to secure a unified
locations protocol for the region and despatched a CD of more than 750
images of the region to over 800 producers, directors, location
managers and production companies to attract filming to the Northern
Rivers region. We’ve provided location pitches for countless features
and commercials, successfully attracting a number to the region.
Activity in the
region is high and over the year Tweed’s Homegrown FilmWorks, under the
excellent guidance of Anne Chesher, has seen five short films produced
representing the diversity of story available in the region. Byron Film
Club has been screening a monthly program of films made by the region’s
filmmakers and the Film Artist’s Co-op has been met eight times,
pitching projects to over 75 members. To date four short films and one
artist promotions DVD have been completed, with four projects in
development.
There are too
many projects happening in the region to report on here and we look
forward to covering your successes through this newsletter next year.
Next year a
Creative Industries Expo is planned to coincide with a conference we’ve
attracted to the region – Oz-E-Culture (see below). Negotiations are
under way with features, television drama and children’s television –
to attract more production activity to the region.
Producers Adam Black and Geoff Barter have
been developing two cable television projects in association with
Screenworks. The first project is a North Coast comedy sketch
series and the second is a lifestyle program set in the region. In
January/February there will be a comedy sketch writing hothouse and
presenter casting sessions. More information will be available in
January 2005. To register interest email info@screenworks.com.au. Please don't call.

Expressions of
interest are rolling in for Zoom, a six-week script intensive for
writers, directors, and producers. What makes a script work or not work
- or partly work? Structure, theme, controlling idea, characterisation,
dialogue - ZOOM explores the ellusive "X" factors of successful screen
story telling via in depth discussion sessions focused not only on the
scripts but also on their realisation on the screen.
Zoom will see 16
participants reading two core scripts per week over a six week program,
with one three hour discussion session scheduled each week. After each
discussion session, the participants will view each completed film for
a follow up critique in the first hour of the following session - it is
recommended that participants only view a course film after the
discussion session focused on that script.
ZOOM will be
convened in mid February 2005. The list of scripts (and web addresses)
is being compiled and will be available on the Screenworks web site
soon.
Expressions of interest to attend Screenwork’s Zoom to be forwarded to info@screenworks.com.au. Please outline why this program would be of value to your professional development.
