SCREENWORKS EVENTS

Seminar with Robert Thirkell - 10am to 12.30pm, Wednesday 1 March, Bangalow A and I Hall.
Robert Thirkell In association with Film Australia, Screenworks is delighted to bring a seminar presented Robert Thirkell, who was voted Britain's number one television producer in Broadcast Magazine's annual list of the hottest 100 people in television. Robert was series editor of JAMIE'S SCHOOL DINNERS and he is a well known 'TV troubleshooter' with a proven track record in making hit TV documentaries and formats.

Since leaving the BBC he has specialised in formatting series at their inception for broadcasters and production companies - guaranteeing their quality and helping series get on air in the capacity of troubleshooter, consultant and series editor. In this session, Robert will explain the seven steps of his landmark C.O.N.F.L.I.C.T. model, which is about the importance of storytelling in documentary, and of traditional dramatic structure that follows the transformation of character through time and conflict.

The model gives seven useful tips on how best to do this based on
JAMIE'S SCHOOL DINNERS.

Robert is currently working on numerous other series including an update of
JAMIE'S SCHOOL DINNERS and THE BABY RACE.

Robert won the BAFTA for best feature series in both 1999 and 2000 for formatting BACK TO THE FLOOR and BLOOD ON THE CARPET. The first series he produced and directed was TROUBLESHOOTER which won the BAFTA for originality. He has created a host of other successful series for the BBC all of which followed a strong narrative storyline and strongly developed characters who were under pressure and undergoing a transformation.

Seminar tickets are $40 and bookings can by made with Deb McBride at events@screenworks.com.au.  Hurry as this will be very popular.

SCREENWORKS NEWS

Farewell from Kate
This is my last newsletter for Screenworks. I am leaving the region for family reasons at the end of this month. I would like to thank all my friends and colleagues who I have worked with over the past three years for your support and inspiration. This region is very special and I am sad to leave - but will stay very much in communication! If you feel so inclined, a farewell gathering will be held at the Bangalow Pub on 24 February from  6pm. All welcome. Following my departure, Deb McBride will be hosting Screenworks events and Chair Lyn McCarthy will be overseeing general Screenworks operations. For newsletter items send to info@screenworks.com.au/

Locations
Over the last few months Screenworks Locations have been busy. We've provided 130 images of Ballina Shire for tourism promotions purposes. We have been assisting with a recce for a television series and also a locally generated feature seeking private financing. We have sent images and crew information to Melbourne for a low budget feature which may be shooting in the region. We've sent images of forests, beaches and headlands for 3 Japanese commercials and 3 Australian commercials. We are currently surveying and providing images of extreme looking homes for a UK television series. If you have any suggestions, please contact Dallas. We've been liaising with councils about making a minor amendment to the filming protocol to ensure that the region is well protected against rogue producers who don't leave the environment as they find it.
