ACHIEVEMENTS, AWARDS, ACCOLADES Congratulations to Catherine Marciniak (SW Deputy Chairperson), producer of the below mentioned episode. The
outstanding success of SBS’s locally produced 'Who Do You Think You
Are?', which achieved the largest ever audience share for an SBS local
production, has provided a double boost by delivering a huge audience
to the next program of the night, according to new figures from OzTAM.
The
first locally produced episode of Who Do You Think You Are?, featuring
veteran actor Jack Thompson, drew 857,000 viewers on Sunday, 13
January, in the 7.30pm timeslot, narrowly missing out on being SBS’s
number one program of the week to the rampant Top Gear (942,000).
Local films make Official Selection at the 2008 BBFF. Congratulations to Akkadia Ford and her team, whose train documentary 'Derailed' is an Official Selection to World Premiere
at the 2008 Byron Bay Film Festival. Key crew on the film are all
Screenworks members and also from the Certificate IV (Screen) at NRCAC,
Lismore.
Congratulations also to Michael Weatherhead with his documentary 'Road to Palestine' that was also selected to be screened. This project was part of the final 5 at the 2006 Life's a Pitch - well done Michael!!
Congratulations to Kamahl Duesne
- winner of 2007 Life's a Pitch who got into DocoMart at the 2008 AIDC

Rainforest Rescue Special Fundraiser Screening - Thursday January 31st Into The Wild - by Sean Penn Byron
Cinemas is hosting a special screening of the acclaimed drama INTO THE
WILD on Thursday January 31st at 6.30pm. Written and directed by Sean
Penn, the film tells the story of 22 year old American Christopher
McCandless, newly graduated from college with a promising future, who
walked out of his privileged life and into the wild in search of
adventure. What happened to him on the way transformed this young
wanderer, as his quest took him from the wheatfields of South Dakota,
on a wild canoe trip down the Colorado River, and on to the
non-conformists refuge of Slab City California. In the end, he tested
himself by heading alone into the wilds of Alaska, where everything he
had seen and learned and felt came to a head in ways he could never
have expected.
The fund-raising screening is to benefit
Rainforest Rescue, formed in 1998 as a not for profit organisation
committed to saving rainforests for current and future generations by
supporting rainforest restoration, research and property purchase
projects.
Rainforest Rescue does not receive government

FILM COURSE PAGE TO SCREEN Date: Saturday 22nd March Venue: Veranda Room, Byron Bay Community Centre Cost: $130 for Screenworks members, $150 for non members, student discount $130.
How
does a director take a script from the black and white type of the
printed page and turn it into a film that not only creates, in sound
and image, a world as real as the world around us, but which also tells
the story in a way that fully realises all the emotive and dramatic
qualities of the screenplay? The answer is by a combination of
creative vision and highly disciplined professional practise.
“Page
to Screen” is a distillation of Charlie de Salis’ 15 years professional
experience as a director working across television commercials,
corporate promotions, short films, television drama and
documentary. The course provides a creative and logistical
toolkit for developing directors, taking the filmmaking process from
the director’s first read of the script, to the creation of a vision
for the film, then into pre production, production, and post
production. For more information, please contact Charlie de Salis at cdesalis@bigpond.net.au

| Respects to Pip Starr
"Further
to the tragic news that independent filmmaker, Pip Starr, has passed
away, myself, and Film Victoria, extend our deepest sympathy to his
family and friends.
Pip's spirit was infectious and his passion
for a better world inscribed in his every word and act. From the time I
first viewed one of his films (Through The Wire) I considered him to a
filmmaker with a huge future. We will miss you Pip, but there is
a legacy so do visit his web site at http://www.starr.tv/ Also his youtube contributions at http://au.youtube.com/ A click for Pip, is a click for what he believed in."
Pips Philosophy: I’ve
been making documentary films in and about various activist communities
for over 10 years. Most doco’s are about human and environmental
issues of local, national and international significance. I
believe documentary should be beautiful and entertaining as well as
emotionally and intellectually stimulating. I have always been inspired
by the work of activists and others who have a long term vision for the
world that is about peace and real sustainability. - written by Steve Warne
CREATIVE FELLOWSHIP FOR WRITERS, DIRECTORS AND PRODUCERS Applications close Wednesday 6 February 2008 Arts
Minister Rod Welford has reminded Queensland's creative talents in the
film industry to get their applications in for four new $15,000
fellowships to help them gain valuable experience.
Mr Welford
said the Creative Fellowship Scheme would assist writers, producers and
directors to advance their career in feature film, documentary,
animation, digital media and television drama production.
"Queensland's
film and television industry is going from strength to strength, which
is why it's important to cultivate our emerging talents to ensure the
longevity of the industry," Mr Welford said.
"Successful
applicants will use their fellowship to undertake a program of
activities in their particular field of expertise. It will help them to
learn new skills so that they can advance their careers and gain
long-term employment in the industry.
"The fellowships could
involve an emerging director getting a placement under a more
experienced director on a long-running television drama, or a writer
using the money to travel overseas to spend time in the script
department of a television production company."
One of the
fellowships is for an Indigenous filmmaker. The Creative Fellowship
Scheme is administered by the Pacific Film and Television Commission.
It is not an entry-level program. Eligible writers, directors and
producers must have a screen credit in two short films, a half-hour
documentary or equivalent digital media projects. Contact: Marnie Stitz on 07 3237 1000
