HOMEGROWN FILMWORKS

A new arts project, Homegrown Filmworks is set to get under way as part of the Tweed's City of the Arts program. All writers, filmmakers, production teams, individual technical crew and interested members of the community now have the opportunity to submit their story ideas and skills for screen production consideration. Six winning story ideas will be produced into short films culminating in a special screening event in November 2004. An information evening outlining project guidelines and providing details on how to submit a story will be held at the Regent Cinema Murwillumbah on Thursday 29 January  2004 at 7.30pm. Contact Anne Chesher on 6674 5256 for more info.

MICROMOVIES FOR MOBILE PHONES

Congratulations to local producer Sophia Zachariou for getting up one of the most innovative initiatives around - in partnership with Pacific Film and Television Commission, they have established Micromovies, aimed at creating entertaining short films for broadcast on a mobile phone network utilising 3G technology.

Micromovies will be a 10-part series of short comic animations. The initiative is open to flash animators, graphic and game designers, art directors as well as short film writers and directors.  Each animated short film must be unique, funny and have a self-contained narrative that can entertain and delight in under three (3) minutes. Filmmakers are encouraged to create stories that utilise an edgy visual style unique to the new broadcast form. Unfortunately applications will only be accepted from filmmakers who are resident in Queensland. A briefing session will be held at Qpix on Tuesday 3 February from 6.30-8pm. RSVP 07 3224 5574 or see http://www.pftc.com.au/

INDIGO PRO

Geoff Burton and Matthew Flanagan have been "inundated with scripts and are slowly working through them" and are now working full time on the Indigo Pro venture. At this stage they have five "possibles", not yet decided at this stage. They have met their investors who are responding well and have indicated their commitment to the project, that they not "go any further than them". Matthew and Geoff are meeting with the AFC early next month to discuss development. Indigo & Screenworks will be planning directions regarding mechanisms for script support into the future.

FLICKERFEST

IQ Inc presented yet another very successful feast of shorts, in Byron’s 6th year. Approximately 450 people attended a stiflingly humid Saturday night featuring 6 films including HARVEY KRUMPET winner Best Animation AFI awards'03. Sunday night was cooler & about 380 people saw another 10 films (all on 35mm) including CRACKER BAG an Australian film winner Palme d'Or, Cannes'03.

IQ Inc wish to thank its sponsors, volunteers & the Flickerfest director Bronwyn Kidd who curates & introduced the films; & look forward to screening Flickerfest (& maybe some more local films) in the same week of January 2005. Hopefully the Festival will return to the IQ Arts & Eco Centre (pending council & community support), otherwise, see you at the A&I hall again. Visit & support: www.IQ.org.au

Anyone interested in helping run a local film element alongside Flickerfest in 2005; or would like to be a volunteer; or would like to run training programs/register as a mentor/or source participants from IQ SCENE (Sustainable Community Employment Network Enterprise), a new & unique Work for the Dole pilot, please contact Shane on 6685 9999.

CONGRATULATIONS

Winners of the national SPAA pitching competition, Grafton-based Cate McQuillen and Lismore-based Aliison Kelly, who pitched their project UNDA.RAGERS continue to go from strength to strength. Their project was the first selected for the high profile XmediaLab workshop in Sydney and they will be packing their hula hoops and taking their project to the international market at Kidscreen in New York's in February. Go girls!

Byron-based Director Tristan Bancks is off to France to present his film SOAR at the Clermont Ferrand Film Festival. SOAR won Most Popular Film and Best Screenplay at the Bondi Flickerfest awards ceremony. SOAR is a twenty minute film made in a single day on one set with two actors, two digital cameras, few lighting setups, minimal crew and paid for on credit card. Produced by Jennifer Lusk and written by Damon Herriman and shot by a Northern Rivers production team….one wonders what this team could come up with given a few more days and a budget! Congratulations to you all.

LOCATION NEWS

A draft location protocol has been developed by Screenworks and is being circulated to Councils of the Northern Region for discussion and feedback.  As with other regions in NSW - Screenworks is working towards the creation of a uniform protocol across the 10 council areas to assist filmmakers and councils in facilitating location filming throughout the region.

We are working on a Screenworks image library available online which will be
available once the new Screenworks website is launched in the very near future. If you have an image of a location you think would be of interest to us - please email locations@screenworks.com.au/ . Make sure you provide a description of the location and its whereabouts, plus all contact details for the location.
