| Byron Bay Writers Festival Screenworks sponsored session 'Great Big People, creating character for performance' When: Saturday 28 July Time: 11.45am – 1:00pm Panel: Bryan dawe, Andrew Knight, Alice Bell. Stephen Sewell Chair: Belinda Chayko An exciting discussion about character development through your written word.
“East of Everything” – up date CREW PROFILES: Joe Janes - Key Grip
“My name is Joe Janes, I
came to Byron Bay for a 2 week holiday 9 years ago, having not been
here before and just fell in love with the town. I met a real estate
agent while I was here and he suggested buying a property as the house
prices were good at the time, so I looked around and ended up owning a
great town house in Suffolk Park.
At
the time I thought the move would effect my work in Sydney but it
didn’t seem to, but it did effect me in regards to getting those jobs
that come in the day before you shoot, ie commercials etc.
Joe on East of Everything location, Bangalow
I
had hoped to work up in Byron for some local production companies but
after a lot of phone calls and sending out my CV, nothing came of that
so I decided that the only way to make it work would be to commute to
Sydney and work and live down there while I was working , then come
home in between jobs. This has worked out well and I’m very happy when
I can get back home.
A typical day is driving the truck to
location which I have already surveyed so I know what equipment we will
need. I’m also the Dolly Grip so I do all of the camera moves on the
dolly, normally on track but we also build dance floors to do camera
moves. I work very closely with the Director and the Director Of
Photography to work out what camera moves they want and how they will
work with the actors. This can also involve car rigs and building
camera cranes.
I have met a lot of great people since I started
working on East Of Everything and hope to work with them again on other
productions somewhere down the track. I’ve realised that there is a lot
of talented film technicians and production crew in Byron and I hope
that this show will take us onto other shows that we can shoot in Byron
Bay in the future.
Before working on East Of Everything I have
worked on a lot of TV commercials, Music Videos, American and
Australian Feature Films and reality shows. After East Of Everything
I will go back to Sydney as I have a job on All Saints, Ch 7 as a Dolly
Grip until something else comes along - such is the nature of our
industry.”
- many thanks Joe
