ACHIEVEMENTS, AWARDS, ACCOLADES CHANGE THE WORLD IN 5 MINUTES
Writer
/director Tristan Bancks and Producer Wendy Gray have completed post
production on their SBS short ‘Change the World in 5 Minutes – at
School’. They had a terrific shoot at Bangalow Public School utilising
a fantastic team of local practitioners (and Screenworks members!).
Theirs is one of nine cross media projects that were funded to explore how individual and community action can make a difference to the world, locally or globally.
The joint project, inspired by the book 'Change The World For Ten
Bucks', was made by Film Australia, SBS Digital Media, the Australian
Film TV and Radio School and the NSW Film and Television Office (FTO).
Film Australia is executive producer of the content in partnership with
the NSW Film and Television Office and the Australian Film, TV and
Radio School. SBS Digital Media will build, host and maintain the
website and work with the successful applicants to create a range of
online interactive content. Segments may also be suitable for screening
on SBS and mobile media. SUCCESS STORIES: Congratulations to Lismore based producer and director, Cynthia Connop, on the completion of ‘Bloodlines’ – a one hour documentary.
‘Bloodlines’
is the story of two women who meet to reconcile their family legacy
from the Holocaust. Bettina Goering is a descendent of Nazi war
criminal Herman Goering, and now a US resident. Ruth Rich is an artist
and the daughter of Holocaust survivors, now living in Bangalow,
Australia. ‘Bloodlines’ was funded by the AFC and produced in
association with ABC TV. The Commissioning Editor is David Jowsey and
it will be screened on Compass later this year. Jackie McKimmie from
the AFC Brisbane office has been a consistent source of inspiration and
faith in the film. Screenworks supported this documentary at
crucial stages. Early on Cynthia received a small grant through the
Screenworks Producer Incubator Scheme, bringing filmmaker Mitzi Goldman
as a consultant producer to the project. This led to a fruitful and
enjoyable connection, with Mitzi becoming the co-producer of
‘Bloodlines’. Cynthia also participated in Screenworks Media Lab which
gave her a chance to network and brainstorm funding and distribution
ideas. According to Cynthia, the opportunity to network with
other filmmakers at Screenworks events and meetings has also added
something to the production.
"‘Bloodlines’ has been locally
produced and edited, and received generous support from everyone
involved in the making of the film" says Cynthia. "I am grateful to
Ruth Rich for access into an intimate time in her life, editor and
associate producer Richard Mordaunt from Coolamon Films has been a
great creative partner in this project and the local shoot was
beautifully filmed by Annie Benzie and recorded by Owen Cassidy."
PERCEPTIONS OF TAFE SURVEY Hatchling
Productions (Clunes) offers their thanks to everyone who responded to
their Perceptions of TAFE industry survey. Randomly selected
participants were eligible to win a digital set-top box or a case of
wine; the set-top box was won by Toni from Bowraville and the wine went
to Jill from Bangalow. Due to a generous discount from our friendly
local bottle shop Bangalow Coast Country Cellars (Byron St, Bangalow),
Jill will enjoy an excellent mixed case of premium wines including Wolf
Blass, Wirra Wirra and Evans & Tate. Thanks, Bangalow
Cellars, and all who participated in the survey!

| “east of everything” – up date
Photo: Crew members Jennifer Deschamps (right) with Nicki Ellis.
With more than 60 crew, 47 of them local, filming on “east of everything”
is about to begin with a real Northern Rivers flavour. Filming starts
this week with a small crew shooting the character Bev, played by
Valerie Bader at Grafton Prison. This shoot begins a heavy two months
of scheduled filming in and around Byron Bay and locations stretching
from Wooyong to Ballina and Grafton. One highlight includes turning
Ballina Airport into Kathmandu Airport.
Screenworks
will work closely with the producers to highlight some of the key local
crew involved over the next few months with interviews and stories from
the frontline. These interviews will give an insight into the calibre
of crew that live in the region.
All
crew roles have now been filled with many of these positions applying
through Screenworks. We would like to thank everybody who emailed in
their resumes and letters of interest. The response was overwhelming
with a crew database now created with 250 people in it. This response
clearly shows how important it is for productions such as “east of
everything” to continue coming to the region, productions that bring
real work to local people.
CREW PROFILES: “east of everything” Jennifer DesChamps, Production Co ordinator.
Jennifer
has lived at Tyagarah since 2005 having bought land there a few years
earlier, but travels all over for film work. She has worked in
the screen industry for 20 years, starting out in accounts moving to
Art Department then Production which she has been doing since ’97. A
Production Co-ordinator is the person who makes sure that all
departments are up to date with all the information that is required.
Taking care of cast- flights, accommodation, and personal requests. The
same with the crew.
Working
on ‘east of everything’ has meant reconnecting with crew she’s worked
with before. Jennifer has also found a “whole new world of people whom
I know I will work with again”.

| FILM FINANCE CORPORATION (FFC) The
FFC is releasing its Investment Guidelines for 2007/08, having
completed its annual consultation with the industry. The document below
uses tracking marks to guide stakeholders to changes in the new
guidelines.
Readers should note that the most significant changes are in the following sections: 0. 2.7 Captioning of feature films 0. 3.5 Domestic distribution and marketing of feature films 0. 7.2 Domestic Door for documentaries The 2007/08 guidelines will come into operation on 1 July 2007.
FFC Co-investment with Producer Rebate
Under
the new film package announced by Government in the May 2007 Budget,
the FFC will be able to co-invest with projects using the new Producer
Rebate. Combined FFC and Producer Rebate sup port will be capped at 75
per cent of the budget of any single film or television program.
Although
the Producer Rebate is to become effective from 1 July 2007, the FFC
stresses that it will be 'business as usual' - under the attached
2007/08 guidelines - at the July and September 2007 FFC board meetings.
The FFC will not be co-investing with the Producer Rebate at either of
these meetings, as further information is required on the detail of the
new rebate scheme.
Guidelines for Producer Rebate
The
FFC will be administering the new Producer Rebate in 2007/08 (this role
will transfer to the new Australian Screen Authority from 1 July 2008).
Guidelines
for eligibility and qualifying expenditure under the Producer Rebate
will be issued early in the new financial year, as Government finalises
the detail of the new scheme and moves towards introducing legislation
(this is expected to be in the Spring Parliamentary sitting:
August-September 2007).
Guidelines for FFC Co-Investment with Producer Rebate
The
FFC is also working towards issuing guidelines for FFC co-investment
with the Producer Rebate later in 2007. As discussed, there will be no
co-investment at either the July or September board meetings, but we
will circulate information to the industry about the timeline for
co-investment as soon as possible.
Broadly
speaking, the emphasis for co-investment will be on projects of
cultural significance which may not be able to attract sufficient
private finance using the Producer Rebate alone.

REGIONAL FILMING FUND (RFF) The
NSW Film and Television Office supports and encourages the growth of
the film and television industry in NSW through the Regional Filming
Fund (RFF). It
is an annual fund that is available for filmmakers that intend to film
at least one week or more in any part of regional NSW. The level of
assistance is based on the total amount a production will expend in a
regional area and considers amounts of up to 35% of the estimated
regional spend. For eligibility and selection criteria, email: wildem@fto.nsw.gov.au
TRAVEL ASSISTANCE The New South Wales Film & TV Office provides assistance for filmmakers to attend international festivals and markets. Festivals Assistance
is available for the producer, director or writer to travel to an
approved international festival with a completed film. The film must
have received prior investment from the FTO. In exceptional
circumstances, the FTO will consider applications from other
significant creatives, such as actors, editors or cinematographers.
Travel assistance is available for feature films, television series,
telefeatures, documentaries and animation, and is in the form of a
grant. Markets Producers
with one or a slate of projects ready for financing can apply for a
travel loan to attend an international market such as Cannes, MIP-TV or
MIPCOM. Applications are assessed on: a project or slate of projects
developed sufficiently to attract market place finance, the track
record of the applicant, the expressed marketplace interest in the
project, a business and travel itinerary with a schedule of pre
arranged meetings. Travel assistance to markets is repayable to the
FTO. Applications are accepted year round with the assessment process taking approximately four to six weeks. For details, email: devfin@fto.nsw.gov.au
