| SYDNEY TRAVELLING FILM FESTIVAL BYRON BAY 30 MAY - 1 JUNE
Byron
Shire audiences are in for a treat when the 2008 Sydney Travelling Film
Festival rolls into town, screening 30 May – 1 June at the Byron
Cinemas on Jonson Street. Delivering the best in world cinema to the
NSW North Coast, this year’s program serves up stories from China,
India, the Czech Republic, Italy and France. The festival opens with a
home-grown treat; a special screening of the glorious Night; the latest
big screen adventure from award-winning director Lawrence Johnston
(Eternity).
An extraordinary cinema experience, Night is a
celebration of Australia after sunset. Capturing the mystery, mood and
magic of Australia after dark, Johnston’s film weaves images and
stories from across the country with a lush and dramatic symphonic score from acclaimed composer Cezary Skubiszewski (The Book of Revelation,
Two Hands). Voices from all walks of life cut across the aural and
visual landscape to tell of their ‘affair’ with the night - the
pleasure and pain, work and leisure, truth and fantasy. The result is
mysterious, beautiful and universal.
Director
Lawrence Johnston will be in Byron Bay to attend the screening of Night
and will take questions from the audience. The film will be followed by
opening night drinks in the cinema foyer to launch the 2008 program.
Information on session times and tickets is included in the enclosed program or online at www.sydneyfilmfestival.org/tff

REELFILMS AT FEDERAL Next Film: Mulholland Drive Date: Saturday 14 June
You
don't have to travel very far for your fix of classic and offbeat
films. Out in Federal, the Reelfilms crew offer a monthly feast of
cinematic entertainment and delicious food in a quirky village setting.
Get out of the Megaplex and into the village hall! Bookings essential!
See you there. Membership available at the door. Bring a cushion. For
more details contact Alan & Anita on 6684 9313.
Update from Reelfilms Well
into our 6th year of operation we are spending some energy on recording
our history with the aim of including it all on our soon to be created
web site. As well as it just being good to record cultural
developments/changes in our area for the future it would be an great
tool for any future grant applications we may make, especially as most
of the committee only have a few memory cells left! So, we are
calling for any bits of history about the film club that you may have
from the beginning or just last week. Whether this is some interesting
event that occurred on your drive to the film night, a story about what
the film club means to you, or a photo of a memorable night, it is all
welcome. Please send this stuff to either PO Box 50 Federal 2480 or aagold@bigpond.com or just bring it along to the next Film night, June 14th.

SCREEN AUSTRALIA UPDATE The
2008/09 Federal Budget was released on May 13, with Arts Minister Peter
Garrett announcing over $200 million in funding for Australia's screen
industry.
In a media statement, Mr Garrett said Screen Australia
will receive almost $103 million in 2008-09. He confirmed that Screen
Australia will administer the Producer Offset, as well as take on the
Australian Film Commission's (AFC) research and statistic functions.
The
National Film and Sound Archive will receive $105.2 million over four
years (including $25.2 million in 2008-09) in the final step towards
its establishment as an independent statutory authority from July 1,
2008. Mr Garrett said the funding included provision for
the costs of instituting a new board and CEO. Click here to

Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website.
FILM PROGRAMS TO CONTINUE UNDER SCREEN AUSTRALIA UNTIL END OF YEAR Existing
film agency guidelines for continuing programs will remain in place
under Screen Australia until the end of the year, the Minister for the
Environment, Heritage and the Arts, Mr Peter Garrett MP, said. Screen
Australia commences on 1 July 2008 following the merger of the
Australian Film Commission, the Film Finance Corporation and Film
Australia Ltd. “While Screen Australia will need to develop new
policies and programs to address the challenges facing the film
industry, I am keen to provide certainty for the industry in the short
term while the merger is taking shape and to avoid any hiatus in
production activity,” the Minister said. “This time frame
will also give the new Screen Australia Board, once appointed, time to
properly review all of the organisation’s programs and structures. This
will ensure they are appropriate to the functions and responsibilities
which Screen Australia will have in strengthening the industrythrough
building screen businesses and supporting projects of cultural merit.” The
decision follows a recommendation from Interim CEO of Screen Australia,
Lyn Maddock, after consultation with key industry groups over the last
month. Ms Maddock is managing the merger of the existing agencies ahead
of the appointment of the incoming Board and permanent CEO.
