INDUSTRY SURVEY
As some of you are aware, a survey is currently online at Screenworks home page http://www.screenworks.com.au/. Please take 20-30 mins to complete it.

Since the last survey was completed four years ago a number of initiatives have occurred that have substantially changed the face of screen industries in our region:

  • Screenworks received funding of$322,000 over three years from the federal government’s SustainableRegions Program
  • North Coast CAMERA received funding of $40,000 from the NSW Film and Television Office, $18,000 from Regional Arts and has run a number of Work for the Dole projects with EnviTE and Tursa
  • SAE World Headquarters opened in Byron Bay
  • Tweed Council awarded the City of the Arts (2003-2005) by the NSW Ministry of the Arts
  • The Homegrown Filmworks project launched in Tweed Council area
  • Indigo Pro launched to produce low budget digital features in the region
  • The Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC) and SPAA Fringe (Screen Producer’s Association) both successfully held in Byron Bay
  • Southern Cross University produced the Rainbow Media Map
  • LINC TV and North Coast CAMERA created the MediaXchange
  • Arts Northern Rivers established by seven local councils in partnership with the NSW Ministry for the Arts and Lois Randall was appointed Regional Arts Officer.

The exact extent of the growth of local screen industries, the nature of projects being undertaken and obstacles and issues facing local producers need further examination to determine whether this growth is sustainable and what measures need to be taken to support this emerging industry. The survey is critical to this process.

LOCAL NEWS

THE MAN WHO STOLE MY MOTHER'S FACE WINS TRIBECA
Congratulations are again extended to Cathy Henkel and Jeff Canin of Hatchling Productions for securing the Judges Award for documentaries at the Tribeca film festival in New York City. With such luminaries as Whoopi Goldberg and Glenn Close on the judging panel, the film co-won the award with one other documentary, ARNA'S CHILDREN. THE MAN was selected as one of 65 films in competition from a record 3,300 entries from around the globe. It was the only Australian documentary selected and was seen at three screenings over four days. The film's profile in North America has received a further boost by screening at Hot Docs, the Canadian International Documentary Festival. At Hot Docs there was one screening to over 300 people with a very active Q & A session afterwards.

'A highlight at Tribeca was when actress Glenn Close came to a screening and came up and hugged me afterwards and said how moved she was by the film... I recorded a video interview with her talking about her feelings about the film; she said we can use it on our web site and in our publicity,' says Cathy.

TALES FROM THE NORTH COAST
Have you checked out Tales from the North Coast - a series of six small documentaries about the NSW North Coast done in Flash format. The stories were produced by Frank Gapinski under funding from the ABC Regional Production Fund. See http://www.abc.net.au/backyard/features/northcoasttales.htm

BUSINESS GROWTH OPPORTUNITY
Over the next few weeks up to 10 businesses will find a home at the newly constructed Business Incubator on the Community Learning & Innovation Centre (CLIC) site in the centre of Mullumbimby.

Garry Bargh, CEO of Ballina Employment & Training who will manage the Village for the CLIC Board, said:

'Our studies in Mullumbimby have shown that the theme is likely to be Information Technology, innovation and the environment, with young people having a particular need. While we will give preference to these types of businesses we will consider all comers.

'We are co-located with the Community Technology Centre which has high end computing power, videoconferencing and a range of digital equipment, and which will provide high speed broadband to all units. Add some office equipment, including a colour photocopier, and free business advice and we believe that we have an attractive proposition for early stage businesses.

'We provide flexible work spaces without the need for bonds or long leases. Our tenants pay one month's rent in advance, are asked to give one month's notice of vacation and have an expected maximum stay of three years. All services are charged at cost so tenants can keep their overheads to a minimum.'

WHAT'S ON

NETWORKING EVENT
Thursday 3 June 7.30pm. Screenworks office.
Local film/video artists are invited to a free and informal evening of introductions and discussion with a view to forming a cooperative of artists who wish to help one another realize their various screen ambitions. The get-together will be convened by local film makers Larry Larstead & Andy Bambach with the central purpose of gauging interest in forming an on going support group, the ‘Film Artist co-op Workshop’ (working title), for the mutual benefit of local talent.

The vision is to see film artists in our community helping one another to gain access to local talent and resources in order to achieve their film making goals. Initially this may include screenwriters improving their scripts through workshopping them with actors, producers and directors while at the same time providing valuable experience for all involved in the process. We hope to see individuals with similar interest coming together to form production units and putting together short ‘portfolio’ film collaborations. So, clear your dance card and make sure you attend the inaugural ‘Film Artist co-op Workshop’ evening! B.Y.O drinks, your good self, and your ideas to share!
