SCRIPT TO SCREEN: CINEMATIC TECHNIQUE FOR DIRECTORS. 2-3 July - $120
While cinema is a profoundly collaborative medium, a film succeeds or fails on the skill, talent and vision of the director.

The cinematic skills of the director must bridge the various dimensions of all the other contributing disciplines of film – cinematography, music, sound, performance, and production design. The more skilled and articulate the director is in these different areas, the more effectively they will be in developing and communicating their vision for the film.

Script to Screen is a 2 day intensive course focussed on illuminating the different aspects of the director’s cinematic craft. Course participants will tie theory to practise via the work of established master filmmakers.

For a full program visit www.screenworks.com.au/pdfs/Script_to_Screen.pdf.

The course is presented by Charlie de Salis, an experienced director, writer and producer whose directing credits include short films, television drama, documentary, commercials, and high-end corporate work. RSVP events@screenworks.com.au or 6680 9220.

SCREENWORKS UNITES REGIONAL COUNCILS TO SUPPORT LOCAL SCREEN INDUSTRY
Northern Rivers Screenworks is running a workshop called ‘When the Circus Comes to Town’ on 2 June, bringing together State and Local Government representatives to maximise the benefits from a sustainable screen industry for the Northern Rivers.

To support the Northern Rivers Region in its aim to become 'film friendly' and attract productions, Northern Rivers Screenworks has circulated a uniform screen production protocol for councils’ consideration. Screenworks is also conducting a workshop called 'When the Circus Comes to Town' to assist in the understanding and implementation of such a protocol.

'This event brings together state and local government, local businesses, tourism and strategic planners with the view to working together to ensure this region maximises the opportunities that the screen industries present in terms of sustainable employment and long term economic and cultural benefits to the region,' said Cathy Henkel, Screenworks' Chair.

Speakers will include Sandra Alexander from the New South Wales Film and Television Office (FTO), as well as:

  • Harry Yates, Location Manager and Producer (FEELING SEXY, MR RELIABLE, DAY OF THE ROSES AND FIRE)
  • Dallas Nock, Location Liaison Officer and Kate Ingham, Manager, Creative Industries Development, Northern Rivers Screenworks
  • Cathy Henkel, Screenworks' Chair; and Writer/Director/Producer, Hatchling Productions (THE MAN WHO STOLE MY MOTHERS FACE and I TOLD YOU I WAS ILL: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF SPIKE MILLIGAN)
  • Rose Wright, Kingscliff Chamber of Commerce

PITCH N’ PUNT – Deadline June 6 – 10am
The 2005 Screenwork’s Pitch N’ Punt Competition is now open for applications. Do you have a feature film, documentary, new media or television project? Are you wanting to pitch it to industry professionals or learn how to pitch more effectively? Then this competition is for you. Participants benefit enormously from the challenge, experience and exposure they receive.

A number of past finalists have had tremendous success with their projects. The Screenworks, then SPAA 2003 winner, Cate McQuillen is now working with Ewan Burnett, Burberry Productions with their project ‘HiT iT’, which is well into development.

The 2002 feature by Kent Williams has received FTO development funding and Roger Monk, screenwriter, is now working with Kent. Both of these projects were highly successful and privy to a pitching workshop and competition prior to their SPAA debut.

Round One is ‘behind closed doors’ in front of a panel of three industry professionals. 5 winners are then selected for a training day, before performing their pitches in front of a public audience. Application forms are located on the Screenworks’ website and the deadline is 9am Monday June 6.

The stakes are high – the winner of the Screenwork’s event will then be submitted to SPAA to compete against the winners from other regional screen agencies. These winners will each receive a ticket to SPAA Fringe worth $200. SPAA will then pick five finalists from their pool of applications based on the written material submitted (see SPAA web site for details).

If the Screenworks winner is one of the five finalists chosen for the 2005 Holding Redlich Pitching competition they will receive a ticket to the SPAA Conference, an opportunity to attend a pitching workshop with Pat Ferns and a chance of winning a return ticket to Cannes or a TV market of their choice, $2000 in spending money, $2000 of legal advice from Holding Redlich and a publicity opportunity with Encore Magazine.

Download the guidelines here.

FILM ARTISTS COOP

Next meeting Thursday 2 June. 7.30pm. Screenworks office. Contact Larry Larstead if you have an idea to pitch – 6680 3279 or larstead@ekit.com

CONGRATULATIONS
Hot on the heals of their screening at MOMA in NYC, Mikchau Kamieniak (writer/director) and AUM's Chryss Kamieniak (Producer) advise that their film BASILISK STARE has been picked up by the Sundance Channel.

HATCHLING FILMS WIN INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM
THE MAN WHO STOLE MY MOTHER'S FACE won the audience choice award for Best Documentary at the London Australian Film Festival at the Barbican last. The film now goes on tour with the festival around the UK from April-June 2005.

I TOLD YOU I WAS ILL: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF SPIKE MILLIGAN has been selected for the 54th Melbourne International Film Festival (20 July 20 to 7 Aug).

The new director’s cut was screened this month at Australia House in London at a gala celebrity function organised by South Australian premiere Hon. Mike Rann. Celebrity guests included Rolf Harris, Lynsey de Paul and some Australian cricketers. Spike's daughters Jane and Sile also attended.

The film has just completed a hugely successful theatrical test season playing to packed audiences in Byron Bay, Ballina and Lismore. Plans are underway now for a theatrical tour down the east coast of Australia in Aug/Sept. Called the SPIKE IS BACK TOUR, the event will feature a live performance by Spike's eldest daughter Laura and musician Glenn Cardier who toured with Spike and the feature length version of the film. The new director's cut will be screening at the Byron Film Club, Byron Bay Community Centre 8 August.

'After feedback from the three screenings in the Northern Rivers region, I decided to change the ending to focus more on Spike’s activism and less on the story about the battle over his estate,' said the film’s director, Cathy Henkel. 'That story is now on the web site where it can be updated as new developments emerge. The new ending makes the film both timeless and more uplifting.'

The website, produced by Kerry Sunderland at Evolve Media, contains a comprehensive insight to Spike’s life and times and provides a complementary partnership to the film. See www.spikemilliganlegacy.com. This web site will be upgraded and more interactive elements added over the next few months and re-launched at the screening in August.

Cathy Henkel and Kerry Sunderland will be presenting a session at this year’s Byron Bay Writer’s Festival, called 'Writing for Multi-platform Delivery – the Spike Model', on Friday 5 August. The premiere screening of the new Director’s Cut is on the following Monday, 8 August, at the Byron Bay Community Centre.
