Web Futures - 10am to 1pm, 10 December
Where are the future business opportunities and trends? Join Mitra Ardron, who started the England’s fourth ISP, GreeNet, in 1985 and contributed to the early development of WWW technology including http. Mitra has just returned from visiting the US where he was researching opportunities. Of interest is the future of RSS - the syndicating and sharing of content, which will fundamentally change the way to attract people to web sites. The most obvious place this shows up is blogs, the self-publishing web phenomena - almost all blogs have RSS feeds. The big question is - where does this leave multimedia professionals, when there is less need for flashy graphics, and more need for meaningful content?

Karey Patterson, Director of Ntechmedia, winners of the 2004 Busines Award for Leadership in Innovation and Technology, is a pioneer of RFID, wireless and handheld application development and will explore the future applications for this technology.

Glen Schaefer will present a case study of a streaming prototype – Channel Byron – working with Screenworks and the Byron Film Co-Operative to provide an online service to promote, distribute and broadcast locally produced content. In his session Glen will discuss potential business and technology models for content delivery using the internet. Glen is an experienced IT consultant who has worked in the Australian IT industry for the last 17 years.

Following the papers, Kerry Sunderland of Evolve Media, will open the discussion up to the participants, to explore opportunities for businesses in the Northern Rivers region. Please rsvp on 6680 9220 or info@screenworks.com.au

Screenwork’s ZOOM – February 2005
Zoom is a six-week script intensive for writers, directors, and producers. What makes a script work or not work - or partly work? Structure, theme, controlling idea, characterisation, dialogue - ZOOM explores the ellusive x factors of successful screen story telling via in depth discussion sessions focused not only on the scripts but also on their realisation on the screen.

As Deb Cox, writer of SEACHANGE says: 'My years at the AFC - where I was exposed to so many scripts, both of good and bad quality - was the best scriptwriting course I could have done. You gain a privileged insight into the preoccupations of a vast number of writers, you become more open to the great range of story-telling possibilities and you become better able to define what it is – beyond issues of "mainstream" or "alternative" - that makes a satisfying screenplay.'

The 16 participants will be asked to read two core scripts per week over the six week program, with one three hour discussion session scheduled each week. After each discussion session, the participants will view each completed film for a follow up critique in the first hour of the following session - it is recommended that participants only view a course film after the discussion session focused on that script.

ZOOM will be convened in mid February 2005. A list of the scripts to be critiqued will be made available on the Screenworks website before Christmas.

ZOOM convenor Charlie de Salis has credits primarily as a writer and director, but also as a producer, ranging across short films (including selection for the Venice and Cannes film festivals), short features, television plays, television documentaries, corporate productions, and commercials. His feature film script MARY, JOE & JESUS DE LIVERS was shortlisted for the NSW FTO’s 2004 Aurora workshop and is currently in development via the Northern Rivers Screenworks Incubator scheme.

Charlie has a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education and lectures in Corporate Production at the Centre for Film, Television and Screen-Based Media at Bond University. He recently established a Screenwriting for Film and Television course via the new TAFE Studio initiative at Kingscliff TAFE College, where he also teaches video production.

Expressions of interest to attend Screenwork’s Zoom to be forwarded to info@screenworks.com.au. Please outline why this program would be of value to your professional development.

Future game design offers opportunity for writers
Currently, designers and programmers are the creative driving force behind a game. However gaming is a very young industry without established rules of development and production. Khrob Edmonds argues that programmers and designers are 'better at creating interesting and challenging experiences than dissecting the human condition'. Collaboration between these game experts and writers may be the key to creating a game that perfectly balances fun and challenging gameplay, with a riveting and engaging story. Khrob Edmonds is conducting a seminar, 'Storytelling Technique as Game Design' at the upcoming Australian Game Developers Conference (AGDC). For more information, visit the AGDC site, http://www.agdc.com.au/
