NEW MEMBER PROFILE Ashley White - Student Screenworks
recently asked awarding winning film maker Ashley White a few questions
about himself and his passion for film making.
What inspires you as a film maker? "Hmm,
this is a tricky one...I'm a very self motivated filmmaker and ideas
and inspiration for films comes from anything and everything. I might
hear someone talking about something that gets me thinking about that
and then in turn that gets me thinking about something else and
eventually a plot kind of develops around that idea."
"For
instance the idea for my film "Vertigo" came from one of my teachers
talking about the school shootings in America and almost immediately I
had this idea for a film based around the kid that does the shooting
and what motivates them to do so. In the end the film had very little
to do with that original idea but it's just those little things,
whether they're conversations, images, other films, music, anything
really, they just create an idea and that idea develops into something
that you can tell a story around. What really inspires me to continue
making films is seeing the impact that they have on audiences."
"When
you're a filmmaker and you've just finished making a film you know it
back to front, you never want to watch it again and overall you don't
think that much of it! So it's the strangest (and best) feeling in the
world to watch an audience captivated by something that you've created
and emotionally moved to the point where some people are in tears.
Sometimes I wish that when I've finished a film I could erase my memory
so that I could watch it afresh and then see what I think of it,
because when I'm showing a film for the fiftieth other people are
enjoying it and I'm sitting there bored!"
Which area of film making do you feel most comfortable in? "Because
I don't have access to large budgets or equipment I do everything on my
own films so I'm fairly comfortable with everything but in a few years
or so I'd like my main focus to be on directing and writing because
that's where my passion really lies. But I'm fairly comfortable with
all aspects of film making, I've done everything from directing entire
films to holding umbrellas to shade cast members on other shoots and to
me it's all just experience so I don't mind doing it."
What are the films Vertigo and Alienation about? "Alienation
is a thriller about a group of friends hanging out together when
strange things start happening around them. The power seems to go out,
even the clocks stop but the lights in the house still work. They
decide to sit tight but later in the day they receive strange phone
calls and one by one the friends start disappearing. And when night
falls, glowing red eyes appear outside in the darkness..."
"Vertigo
is a Psychological Drama about a high school student who is consoling
with a teacher as he feels as though he has lost his sense of reality.
The teacher tries to understand how the student feels, but how can he,
when the student doesn't even understand himself? Vertigo isn't really
a film that I can say much about because it's kind of complicated and
the kind of thing you only understand once you've seen the whole thing."
Is there anything that you would like to say about being a film maker in the Northern Rivers? "At
the moment I'm not hugely involved with film overall on the Northern
Rivers. Because I'm still in school doing my HSC but I still have a
group of friends including Terry Bleakley and Lisa Sharpe who I work
with whenever they have a project on and I try to go to as many film
events and things like that as I can. Hopefully when I finish school in
another month I'll become much more involved in some of the other
things that are going on."
"The
way it's going I don't see myself not having a film project on the go
from now until the day I'm old and wrinkling and even beyond that. It's
what I love doing so I don't see any other option but keep on doing it
for the rest of my life."
thanks Ashley!

| LEGISLATION PASSED
On 20 September 2007 the Australian Parliament passed legislation
establishing the Australian Screen Production Initiative. The
initiative provides over $280 million over 4 years to promote the
production of film and television in Australia through a Producer
Offset, Location Offset and PDV Offset. Fact sheets and media releases
about the initiative are available on the DCITA website.
AUSTRALIA SIGNS CO-PRODUCTION TREATY WITH SINGAPORE As part of the APEC conference held in Sydney in early September, Australia and Singapore signed a film and TV co-production agreement. Official co-productions are treated as domestic productions of both participating territories, and allow producers access to both countries' incentive schemes for domestic productions. The scheme will be administered by the Media Development Authority of Singapore and the Australian Film Commission, the Australian body with responsibility for co-productions. For the complete article in Encore: Web:http://www.ausfilm.com.au/file_banks/ausfilm/misc_pdf/Encore%20Sing%20Copro.pdf
AUSTRALIAN DIRECTOR BELINDA KING WINS TOP PRIZE AT TROPFEST@TRIBECA Tropfest@Tribeca announced the award winners of the new free public outdoor short film festival on September 23 at the World Financial Center Plaza in New York City. The new Festival, a collaboration between Tribeca Enterprises and John Polson, creator of Australia’s Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival, premiered 16 films in front of 7500 attendees. The event was also sent live via satellite to Brookfield Properties FCP Park at First Canadian Place in Toronto, Canada. For more information on the event and Belinda King’s win: Web: http://www.if.com.au/News/View.aspx?newsid=378
FFC UPDATE Now
that the Producer Offset Legislation has been passed by Parliament, the
Film Finance Corporation (FFC) is working on the final steps of
launching the scheme. The FFC is now finalising the Producer Offset Rules, which settle some administrative aspects of the scheme. The
legislation and Rules provide the foundation for the Producer Offset
Guidelines and Application Form, which are currently being drafted by
the FFC. We
expect to release the offset guidelines and application form to the
industry in the first week of November 2007 (subject to receipt of
required legal advice by the FFC). Once
the guidelines and application form have been released, producers can
apply to the FFC for certification of their projects. Prior to that
time, the FFC can offer advice on the Producer Offset. Producers
seeking the Producer Offset benefit can apply for provisional
certification before going into production, however, this is not
mandatory. Once the film is completed, producers with a provisional
certificate must also apply to the FFC for final certification in order
to receive the offset benefit.
SPAA UPDATE SPAA
has confirmed that Rex Wong, CEO of DAVE.TV™ (Distributed Audio Video
Entertainment) will be a keynote speaker at the annual Conference being
held 13 to 16 November at the Sheraton Mirage Resort on Queensland's
Gold Coast. He will speak on industry forecasts and future technologies
on Thursday, 15 November at 9am.
Before joining DAVE.TV" in
December 2005, Wong was responsible for co-founding several technology
companies including Applied Semantics, the developer of AdSense which
was acquired by Google in 2003, Acclertech, manufacturer of high
density server platforms where he served as President, and XC2, a
digital lifestyle consumer electronics manufacturer. DAVE.TV" is the
first cross-platform digital delivery network that delivers IPTV
(Internet Protocol Television) and video over IP to TVs, PCs, portable
and mobile devices. DAVE.TV develops IPTV platforms for service
providers such as Telcos, CLECS, MSOs and ISPs. The growing
Interactive Television (ITV) space reveals a new demand for the
convergence of interactive technology and television in which the user
experience is enhanced through increased control over program content,
enabling the viewer to immediately respond or alter programming.
Video-on-demand (VOD), interactive news and educational programming,
niche or local oi9fe event streaming video, and more are possibilities
in the ITV experience. DAVE.TV™ is at the forefront of this development
with its IPTV/ITV set-top box platforms.
