MEDIAWORKS DEADLINE IS FRIDAY 5 NOVEMBER
MediaWorks is a three day project intensive workshop aimed at media practitioners based in the Northern Rivers region.

This is a project-focused, intensive workshop that aims to assist participants with the planning, development, financing and distribution of their film, TV or new media project. Over the three days, the workshop will cover development, financing, distribution and production paths. Case studies of successful projects that have been produced locally, as well as successful national and international projects will also be examined.

Over the three days, participants will work together in a confidential environment to brainstorm pathways for each phase of the production cycle, from concept to distribution. One of the aims is to look at ways of exploiting new media technologies and the internet to help with the financing and distribution of projects. Other aims include ensuring that projects are being appropriately marketed, be they at concept stage or completed and ready for distribution.

The workshop will provide the contact details for the gatekeepers and organisations relevant to projects. It will also encourage participants to seek collaborative opportunities with other practitioners.

Filmmaker and author Marcus Gillezeau will facilitate the workshop. Marcus has had more than fifteen years experience as a producer, specialising more recently in digital technology and new media. His highly acclaimed book ‘Hands On – A practical guide to film, TV and new media.’ has been embraced by film, TV and new media professionals and is now used by many universities and colleges around the country. Last year, Marcus ran a similar workshop with ScreenWorks that was highly successful.

Guest speaker includes Paul Wiegard of Madman Entertainment who have been distributors of anime video and DVD since 1997, bringing such manga animation smashes as Dragon Ball Z and Neon Genesis Evangelion to Australian shores and diversifying in adding an armoury of strong arthouse/foreign dramas with considerable market success. Highlight titles include Sex: The Annabel Chong Story, Shadow of the Vampire, Innocence and The Girl Next Door.

The other speaker is David Franken who has worked for Seven Brisbane for twenty-one years. He has focused on format-building, manipulation, enhancement and series development. He has worked with many independent practitioners and will forecast opportunities and financing models in the broadcast arena.

MediaLab is 24, 25, 26 November held at the Community Centre. It is free, supported by the Australian Film Commission and NSW Film and Television Office.

Applicants will be required to pitch their project at the workshop, and will be given the opportunity to receive project pitch training on 10 November.

To apply to MediaWorks, forward a one page description of the project, be it a documentary, short, feature, animation or television program to Screenworks. Provide a brief biography of the key principals of the project – writer, director, producer. Outline the audience for the project and how you intend to bring the project to market.

Last year’s comments:
“Cutting edge info from people who are driving the changes in the industry”
“High level informative insightful window into the cutting edge working life of independent filmmakers…fascinating!”
“Very informative. Great to hear and learn from other people’s projct and hear feedback on mine”
“Excellent. Cutting edge information presented in a very accessible, useful, entertaining way”
“Incredibly informative with great material to take away with us”

Deadline for applications is Friday 5 November. (Producer Incubator applicants need not apply.)
