SCREENWORKS EVENTS

MediaWorks - 12 to 14 December, 2005
Have you an idea for the screen in development? MediaWorks 3 is on again. It is a three day project focused intensive workshop aimed at media practitioners based in the Northern Rivers region with some places available for filmmakers outside of the region.

The workshop will focus on getting your project made - financing, distribution, marketing as well as looking at developing a cross platform project. The workshop will provide the contact details for the gatekeepers and organisations relevant to projects. It will also encourage participants to seek collaborative opportunities with other practitioners.

Filmmaker Cathy Henkel will facilitate the workshop. Cathy's company Hatchling Productions has produced over 20 programs including five documentaries for television, 10 commissioned works for the educational and training market, five self-initiated programs and two short films. Most recently Cathy has produced two award winning cross platform projects - THE MAN WHO STOLE MY MOTHER'S FACE, and I TOLD YOU I WAS ILL - THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF SPIKE MILLIGAN.

Co-presenting the session is Kerry Sunderland of Evolve Media. Evolve Media specialises in adapting media forms to new technologies and developing ways of using new delivery platforms to tell stories and communicate with audiences. Kerry most recently project managed the cross platform aspects of THE MAN WHO STOLE MY MOTHER'S FACE  http://www.themanwhostolemymothersface.com/) and the Spike project http://www.spikemilliganlegacy.com/
Kerry edits Research News and QPIX News and was responsible for the AIDC conference website. She is currently managing the Visual Arts Network website.

Both Cathy and Kerry have presented cross platform production workshops this year for South Australian Film Corporation, Northern Rivers Writers Festival, and AFTRS. Cathy was a speaker at the recent SPAA and SPAA Fringe conferences and presented a major seminar on cross-platform delivery at the recent ASDA (Australian Screen Directors Association) national conference. She has been invited to present a seminar on this subject in Darwin hosted by the Northern Territory Film Office and Popcorn Taxi in November.

Also presenting will be Nick McMahon, CEO of Crawfords who is responsible for THE SADDLE CLUB – a classic and highly successful multi platform project. He is also Vice president of SPAA.

Project participants will be required to pitch their projects as part of the workshop and will be given pre pitch training in preparation.

Last year's workshop participants said:

“It was the most relevant, CURRENT, empowering and functional media related program I have ever attended” and “excellent course. We were given a lot of information very relevant to our work and projects.”

“Mediaworks is invaluable as a refresher, source of new knowledge and new ideas for production techniques, values, delivery and funding….I learned most about cross platform delivery – looking at different and ever changing audience and market interests and market value of various productions.”

“The best, most intensive brainstorm I’ve ever experienced….learned most about development paths – viable and realistic.”

“Excellent course. We were given a lot of information very relevant to our work and projects. There was great support for individual projects and their unique needs. The quality of the teachers was very high. Mediaworks also creates a forum for group collaboration and support….I learned a lot about the new forms of media distribution, doing deals, holding rights. Also broadcast programming was explained very well. Also projects into the future in terms of program content and formats of delivery via digital means.”

“It was excellent, the presenters were first rate and the sharing of ideas in the group was inspirational….I learnt how to create engines for a series and what television programmers are looking for. I also learnt how important it is to get different ideas and input to move a project along. New possibilities were also created using internet and DVD sales and packaging.”

“Very informative, creative and inspiring….learned about new technologies, trends, broad overview of marketing process, how to create many opportunities for future employment.”

“Fantastic…very impressed. Very well organized. Full on. There was no wasted time. Learned most about the sort of game TV distribution has developed into over the past 40 years. I learned that I did not know much about the industry despite being in the industry since 1958.”

“Very informative…learned most about alternative funding possibilities.”

To apply to MediaWorks, forward the following information:
1. a one page description of the project, be it a documentary, short, feature, animation, cross platform/online or television program.
2. additional pages providing a brief biography of the key principals of the project – writer, director, producer.
3. an outline the audience for the project and how you intend to bring the project to market.

Applications close 14 November. Short listed participants will be asked to pitch their project behind closed doors on Monday 28 November. MediaWorks is on the 12, 13, 14 December from 9-5pm. Cost is $100 and there will be concession places available upon application. The venue is in Mullumbimby.

MediaWorks has been gratefully supported by the Australian Film Commission and the NSW Film and Television Office.
