STORYTELLING IN VIRTUAL MEDIA Digital Media for writers, screen industry practitioners and artists. Northern
Rivers Screenworks Inc and SAE Institute are pleased to announce
keynote speaker Ben Batstone-Cunningham from the USA for a joint
seminar day exploring the opportunities for narrative, 2D & 3D
screen content and on line identities in the Virtual World of on-line
communities, machinima and virtual assets.
The
seminar will use case studies to track the development and career
opportunities for the creative community, including the ‘Tools’ for
filming and directing actors inside virtual worlds, audio streaming in
2nd Life and virtual & social media.
Ben
Batstone-Cunningham, was at the forefront of the development of the
‘Second Life’ concept and on line communities in the USA and is a co
author of “Second Life: The Official Guide”. Ben has recently set
up his own company Alt-Zoom Studios as a consultant and creator of
content for Virtual Worlds.

ACHIEVEMENTS, AWARDS, ACCOLADES Congratulations to John Campbell Local
writer and Screenworks member John Campbell's episode of ' Marx &
Venus', 'The Junket' was screened on SBS on Monday 1st October (before
South Park) and repeated on Thursday 4th (before Inspector Rex). John's
script for 'M & V' was one of 25 chosen from 800 submitted. 'Oh
Monah", The short film he wrote & directed has been selected for
screening at the Heart of Gold International Film Festival in Qld. in
late October.
Excellence in the pursuit of documentaries
The
team over at Radio Pictures, in Mullumbimby, headed up by Mark Lewis
have been entertaining us in the 8pm time slot on ABC TV Tuesdays for
the past three weeks with tales of giant pumpkin growing, feral ferret
owners and hair mania, don’t miss next weeks finale 9th October with
the challenges of synchronized swimming and underwater make up.
Teen winner in school moviemania!
Local Screenworks member, Ashley White,
a Year 12 student, has had 11, yes, eleven wins at the Australia &
New Zealand schools film competition. Ashley submitted 3 short films
and won six 1st places including Young Filmmaker of the Year; four 2nd
places and one 3rd place. Congratulations Ashley. To see Ashley’s films

local news.

| BANGALOW FILM NIGHT TO CELEBRATE LOCAL TALENTAs
a celebration of local talent a selection of short films will be
screened at Bangalow pub on Thursday 25 October at 7.30pm, Ashley White
will screen his award winning films along with other local filmmaker
and father of the year Terry Bleakely who will screen ‘Bills Team’ a
documentary he and Lisa Sharpe produced about a team of people who
support a young man critically injured 18 years ago. Lisa will
also screen her film “Some People” based on a story by Aussie Actor
William McInnis. it stars local actors, Scott McGregor, Sarah Jane
Hall, Josh Pilgrim and Paula Williams. Complete line up to be announced
soon.
A
live performance on the night by Cody Butler who wrote and performed
the song for “Bills Team” will top of a great night of entertainment. Tickets $14 & $12 at the Bangalow Post office Concession price for Screenworks members – must show card.
THE BYRON BAY FILM FESTIVAL SEEKS LOCAL FILMS The
2008 Byron Bay Film Festival will run between 29 Feb and 8 March 2008,
featuring the work of international, national and local filmmakers.
BBFF brings an array of Australian and world premieres to the Bay many
of which reflect the values and interests of our local community. A new
Best Local Film award has been created which is open to films of all
lengths and genres not screened before January 2006 with a producer
&/or director who lives in the Northern Rivers Region.
Local
filmmakers receive a discounted entry fee of $15 until 30 Sept and then
$20 until BBFF 2008’s Final Deadline for entries on 31 Oct. Entry forms

ABC ARTSNEST 2007 A quick reminder that entries for ABC North Coast's ArtsNest Award close at 5pm on Friday 5 October.
ArtsNest is about discovering new and emerging artists who live and work in the North Coast. Emerging
artists who live in the North Coast (Clarence Valley, Richmond Valley,
Tweed, Kyogle, Ballina, Byron, Lismore or Tenterfield) and are over 18
are encouraged to see if they fit within the criteria and apply. You
will be required to submit an artist's statement as well as a sample of
your work. The award is about recognising achievement and nurturing
potential and puts the focus on the artist, rather than one piece of
work.
This award is designed to offer a fabulous opportunity for
exposure on ABC north Coast to the 12 finalists. Their work will also
take a 3 month tour of the three Regional Galleries in the Northern
Rivers and the overall winner will receive a professional development
plan coordinated by Arts Northern Rivers.
There are three broad
categories: Screen Artists, Visual Artists and Performing Artists. The
three Regional Gallery Directors, as well as representatives from
Screenworks, Northern Rivers Conservatorium and Northern Rivers
Performing Arts will all offer expertise in their specialist area to
help shortlist.

REELFILMS AT FEDERAL You

BYRON FILM CLUB Byron Film Club are holding an important screening November 27. The
Byron Film Club (BFC) in association with I.Q inc hold their screenings
of locally connected short films bi-monthly at the Byron Community
Centre. The non-profit co-operative, guided by Faye, Azza and Frank, is

FILM ARTISTS CO-OP
The
Film Artists Cooperative (FAC), currently have their monthly meetings
from 7:30 to 10 pm on the 1st Thursday of each month at the meeting
rooms of the Byron Bay Services Club, Jonson Street, Byron Bay.
The next meeting is Thursday October 4. FAC is an independently run
filmmaker and digital artist support group and membership is free. FAC
is always looking for new members and everyone is encouraged to
participate.

Sydney Traveling Film Festival at Bowraville The
Traveling Film Festival returns to Bowraville Theatre from 2 to 4
November with a weekend of award winning international cinema to
surprise and delight you. With films from Australia as well as Russia,
Denmark, India and France, this year’s program has something to please

PFTC, in association with QPIX, is calling for documentary treatments
to be developed in its new Documentary Development Programme.
Interested applicants MUST present a slate of at least three (3)
documentaries (maximum 5) to be considered for this programme. DEADLINE: 5pm Friday, 5th October

THE COMEDY CHANNEL - Digs for Australian Comedy Gold at SPAA Conference As
part of this year's SPAA Conference, the Comedy Channel is offering up
to $25,000 towards the development of a new TV comedy concept. The
winner will be announced at the Conference being held at the Sheraton
Mirage Resort on the Gold Coast from 13 to 16 November. The Comedy
Channel is inviting Australian writers, performers and producers to
submit programme ideas for a 13 part half-hour comedy series. The
Comedy Channel's Manager and Programme Manager will look at all
submissions and select a total of six finalists to participate in this
exciting new initiative. All finalists will be required to register
for the Conference in November where they will have the opportunity to
pitch their comedy concept directly to a panel of judges, including
Foxtel's Head of Television, Brian Walsh and Head of Entertainment,

OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME FOR A GOOD IDEA The
Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) is staging pitching
workshops around Australia as part of the Holding Redlich Pitching
Competition, a key event at the annual Screen Producers Association
(SPAA) Conference in November, which offers a trip to Cannes as first
prize.
The competition gives newer producers and writers the
opportunity to pitch their project to an audience that includes
international executives, broadcasters and key local industry. There is
also a trip to Cannes to be won! AFTRS will be staging a preliminary
round of pitching workshops and competitions across Australia. Four
finalists selected from these workshops will go on to the Holding
Redlich Pitching Competition in association with AFTRS, held at the
SPAA Conference on the Gold Coast, 15 November 2007, with a chance to

AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN'S TELEVISION FOUNDATION - Feature Film Initiative The
ACTF is offering selected creative teams a development funding package
for up to four local features aimed at children between 6 and 13.
Projects should have a production budget that is capable of being
financed largely out of Australia. Funding is to cover development
costs up to delivery of a second draft script. It is expected that the
vast majority of funds will be spent directly on the development of the
film (ie., writer’s fees, script editor’s fees, etc). Funds cannot be
spent on purchasing the right to use existing works (eg book options).
Only creative teams, consisting of at least a producer and writer, may

SUNSCREEN INDEPENDENT MUSIC VIDEO COMPETITION Australia's
only independent music video competition. SunScreen aims to give
artists and directors a chance to showcase their music videos without
the competition of big budget videos from the major labels. Now into
its third year, SunScreen has once again teamed up with Festival of the
Sun which shares the same attitude of independence and supporting
Australian talent. The final will take place at Festival of the Sun on
14 & 15 December where the 16 finalists videos will be showcased
and subject to another audience vote. The final winner will be
determined by the highest percentage of SMS votes by the Festival of
the Sun audience and the winning director will receive $10,000 worth of

NSW FTO YOUNG FILMMAKERS FUND The
Young Filmmakers Fund supports new and emerging filmmakers in NSW
(18-35 years old) and provides a unique opportunity for young talent to
break into the highly competitive film and television industry. There
are two funding rounds per year with up to four projects selected in
each round. Successful applicants receive grants of up to $30,000 for
production and/or post-production. Applications and guidelines online.

The NSW Film and Television Office is calling for preliminary
expressions of interest (EOI) from applicants intending to submit to
this grant round. No application form is required at this stage. EOIs
should consist of: Applicant details including company and contact details The creative team and cast attached if any (max 1 page) An extended synopsis of the project, and type of project (max 1 page)
Proposed Financing plan and status of finance and proposed FTO amount
requested (max 2 pages). Project Officers will liaise with applicants
as the financing of their project develops. Only those projects able to
demonstrate financial readiness will be invited to progress formally

NSW Film and Television Office supports and encourages the growth of
the film and television industry in NSW through the Regional Filming
Fund (RFF). It
is an annual fund that is available for filmmakers that intend to film
at least one week or more in any part of regional NSW. The level of
assistance is based on the total amount a production will expend in a
regional area and considers amounts of up to 35% of the estimated
regional spend. For eligibility and selection criteria, email: wildem@fto.nsw.gov.au
NSW FTO TRAVEL ASSISTANCE The New South Wales Film & TV Office provides assistance for filmmakers to attend international festivals and markets. Festivals
Assistance is available for the producer, director or writer to travel
to an approved international festival with a completed film. The film
must have received prior investment from the FTO. In exceptional
circumstances, the FTO will consider applications from other
significant creatives, such as actors, editors or cinematographers.
Travel assistance is available for feature films, television series,
telefeatures, documentaries and animation, and is in the form of a
grant. Markets
Producers with one or a slate of projects ready for financing can apply
for a travel loan to attend an international market such as Cannes,
MIP-TV or MIPCOM. Applications are assessed on: a project or slate of
projects developed sufficiently to attract market place finance, the
track record of the applicant, the expressed marketplace interest in
the project, a business and travel itinerary with a schedule of pre
arranged meetings. Travel assistance to markets is repayable to the
FTO. Applications are accepted year round with the assessment process taking approximately four to six weeks. For details, email: devfin@fto.nsw.gov.au FFC FUNDING DEADLINES The
FFC has deadlines for funding applications in all program categories.
All information and documentation must be supplied by the date
specified and any application missing relevant materials must wait
until the subsequent deadline and board meeting.
Note that for
Evaluation projects, these deadlines apply only for those projects with
a Letter of Intent which are seeking FFC commitment to finance;
otherwise, projects making an application for Evaluation can be

ABC Regional Production Fund commissions work form experienced radio
producers and talented content providers that live outside the major
capital cities. If you have an idea for a complete and delivered

| AUSTRALIAN SCREEN: new website resource - www.australianscreen.com.au The
Australian film industry has launched a huge online archive of
newsreels, advertisements, TV shows and movie clips covering more than
a century of Australian filmmaking. Australian Screen is a look at the
Australian film and
television industry, from its earliest days to the present. You can
view clips from Australian feature films, documentaries, TV programs,
shorts, home movies, newsreels, advertisements, other historical
footage, and sponsored films
produced over the last 100 years, with curators’ notes and other
information about each title. The site currently contains 1,513 clips
from 585 film and television titles, and is constantly being added to. You can also visit the education page for educational content provided by The Learning Federation: www.australianscreen.com.au
SPAA
has confirmed that Rex Wong, CEO of DAVE.TV™ (Distributed Audio Video
Entertainment) will be a keynote speaker at the annual Conference being
held 13 to 16 November at the Sheraton Mirage Resort on Queensland's
Gold Coast. He will speak on industry forecasts and future technologies
on Thursday, 15 November at 9am.
Before
joining DAVE.TV" in December 2005, Wong was responsible for co-founding
several technology companies including Applied Semantics, the developer
of AdSense which was acquired by Google in 2003, Acclertech,
manufacturer of high density server platforms where he served as
President, and XC2, a digital lifestyle consumer electronics
manufacturer. DAVE.TV"
is the first cross-platform digital delivery network that delivers IPTV
(Internet Protocol Television) and video over IP to TVs, PCs, portable
and mobile devices. DAVE.TV develops IPTV platforms for service
providers such as Telcos, CLECS, MSOs and ISPs. The
growing Interactive Television (ITV) space reveals a new demand for the
convergence of interactive technology and television in which the user
experience is enhanced through increased control over program content,
enabling the viewer to immediately respond or alter programming.
Video-on-demand (VOD), interactive news and educational programming,
niche or local oi9fe event streaming video, and more are possibilities
in the ITV experience. DAVE.TV™ is at the forefront of this development
with its IPTV/ITV set-top box platforms.
The
Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA) announced the feature
film projects from Australia and New Zealand for this year's SPAAmart. The
eleven selected projects from Australia and New Zealand were chosen
from a larger than usual field, where the level of development was high
and the market readiness exceptional. It includes a number of highly
experienced and awarded directors and producers.

BREATHLESS: FRENCH NEW WAVE TURNS 50 – Brisbane - 31 Aug to 2 Dec In
the late 1950s and 1960s, a disparate group of filmmakers in Paris
reinvigorated cinema with offbeat and energetic approaches to
filmmaking. A moment rather than a movement, what became known as the
Nouvelle Vague or French New Wave brought together film enthusiasts who
broke away from tired formulas and experimented with new approaches to
narrative, genre, the cinematic image, montage and sound. Presented by
the Australian Cinémathèque with the generous support of the French
Embassy in Australia, Breathless: French New Wave Turns 50, provides
the opportunity to see New Wave classics on the big screen, including
work by Claude Chabrol, Jacques Demy, Jean Eustache, Jean-Luc Godard
