SPAA FRINGE COMES TO REGION

SPAA Fringe in Byron 14 to 16 NovScreenworks is thrilled to have secured a partnership with SPAA that sees the Fringe conference brought to a regional area for the first time.

An offshoot of the Screen Producers Association of Australia’s (SPAA) annual conference, SPAA Fringe is a conference designed to provide an affordable opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to learn all important business skills, network, meet senior industry figures and gain development opportunities. Features, short drama and documentary for film and television will be covered in a series of presentations and panel discussions designed to demystify the fundamentals of development, funding, production, post production, marketing and distribution.

Dates for the conference are November 14, 15 and 16. The numbers are limited so early registration is encouraged. The conference is only $200 with day passes at $99. IF subscribers $185 and SPAA members $165. Registration is online at www.spaa.org.au/fringe_2003.
The fee does not include lunch or social events.

SPAA Executive Director Geoff Brown, said:
‘We are delighted to partner with Screenworks to host the SPAA Fringe this year. The success of the Australian International Documentary Conference at the beginning of the year, indicates the high level of interest in the screen industries in the region. SPAA Fringe offers an essential step up for aspiring filmmakers. Producers who attend the conference and have at least one credit behind their name can then apply for schemes such as the SPAA Emerging Producer Scheme. This provides filmmakers from the region with further opportunities to do business with key Australian and international producers, acquisition executives and funding bodies at the main SPAA Conference.’

VIDEO GAMES

Screenworks has been in discussion with a video games production company about the possibility of developing a Northern Rivers cluster of graphics personnel to assist with their productions. If you know people with 3D modelling and/or animation skills - 3D modelling and texturing, in particular, ‘low polygon’ expertise (i.e. making 3D objects for real-time display) - get them to contact Kate at the Screenworks office on 6680 9220.

LOCATION NEWS

On the location front, Screenworks met with all the NSW Regional Film Offices and the NSW FTO to discuss commonality and regional issues. Each office is unique with some offering purely location services and others developing practitioner bases. There was great interest in what is occurring in the Northern Rivers Region with Screenworks.
