Screenworks
is very excited to be hosting the premiere of the film in Byron and
enabling you to meet the director, Dee McLachlan, when she discusses
her amazing journey.
THE
JAMMED is a deeply powerful Australian film that journeys to the flip
side of the Australian dream, unearthing a dark world of sex slavery
that few know about or dare to mention. Inspired by actual events and
court transcripts, director Dee McLachlan presents a horrifying story
about slavery, debt bondage and sexual servitude. THE JAMMED highlights
the contrast of Melbourne as a sophisticated, cultured city – with the
constant human tragedy and abuse that is the reality for the victims of
illegal trafficking into sexual slavery in Australia - then
deportation. This story is relevant, contemporary, gutsy, entertaining
and surprising.
Background on the film The
Jammed has been confirmed as the highest grossing opening for an
independent Australian film and fourth highest for all Australian films
on record after Lantana, Crocodile Dundee I and II. Three weeks before
the film nearly slipped straight to DVD, the producers managed to
secure just one screen in Melbourne without a marketing budget.
Following David Stratton and Margaret Pomeranz's At The Movies review
and Jim Schembri's article in The Age – the movie clearly found an
audience.

New Members Profile Ly De Angeles - Emerging Professional Member
Ly
De Angeles is well known in the United State as the author of many
books, both fiction and non fiction on the subject of witchcraft and
the supernatural. It seems Australia may first hear of Ly as a
scriptwriter as she tackles the adaptation process from novel to screen
with her usual mix of talent and wit. With a background on
the stage, this mystic feminist writer gained early training at North
Sydney’s independent theatre, directing her imagination into words and
performance. A local in the Northern Rivers, the list of current
works in development is a testament to her energy and focus. “All
Hallows” is being written in collaboration with Victoria
Sullivan and Baz Luhrman, making this a celebration of the level of
professional crafting and networking of scriptwriters in the Northern
River. Ly’s most recent screenplay “Under Snow” is co written
with her daughter, Serenity, as a supernatural romance. Ly De Angeles
speaks diversity in a landscape of screenplays.
We are keen to hear stories and profiles from our Screenworks members. Please send to events@screenworks.com.au
