'Surf and Turf' Best Documentary Award
Local
filmmakers, Terry Bleakley and Lisa Sharpe have experienced some
success at the recent Surf and Turf Film Festival, held over Easter in
Evan’s Head and Casino. Lisa and Terry’s collaborative effort, Bill’s
Team, was awarded Best Documentary at a gala awards night in the Casino
Civic Hall. The doco was first shown in Bangalow last October and is
about a team of volunteers in Lismore who care for a severely brain
damaged young man. Terry and Lisa are not only very excited to have
received this award, but are pleased that it presents another
opportunity to publicise Bill’s story and attract more volunteers to
help with his care and rehabilitation.
Congratulations also to Nick Zammitt and
the 2007 Cert IV Screen students from Northern
River Conservatorium of Arts Centre whose short film 'Expresso
Love' was accepted and screened at Surf and Turf Festival.

How
does a director take a script from the black and white type of the
printed page and turn it into a film that not only creates, in sound
and image, a world as real as the world around us, but which also tells
the story in a way that fully realises all the emotive and dramatic
qualities of the screenplay? The answer is, by a combination of
creative vision and highly disciplined professional practise.
“Page
to Screen” is a distillation of Charlie de Salis’ 15 years professional
experience as a director working across television commercials,
corporate promotions, short films (selected for 26 international
festivals, including Venice and Cannes), television drama and
documentary. The course provides a creative and logistical
toolkit for developing drama directors, taking the filmmaking process
from the director’s first read of the script, to the creation of a
vision for the film, then into pre production, production, and post
production. For more information, please contact Charlie de Salis

DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE
This
grant from the NSW Film and Television Office (FTO) is to assist
projects to reach the stage where they are ready to attract production
finance. Development assistance takes the form of an investment which
is repaid with interest when a project goes into production. Funding is
available for the following types of projects: feature films,
television series and telefeatures; documentaries; animation.
The
FTO favours projects which show a commitment to quality, innovation and
potential commercial viability; provide a clear economic benefit to NSW
and its film community; are likely to be substantially produced in NSW;
and are qualifying Australian films. Details online. Tel 02 9264 6400 Email Website www.fto.nsw.gov.au
REGIONAL
FILMING FUND (RFF)
The
NSW Film and Television Office supports and encourages the growth of
the film and television industry in NSW through the Regional Filming
Fund (RFF).
It
is an annual fund that is available for filmmakers that intend to film
at least one week or more in any part of regional NSW. The level of
assistance is based on the total amount a production will expend in a
regional area and considers amounts of up to 35% of the estimated
regional spend. For
eligibility and selection criteria, email: wildem@fto.nsw.gov.au
TRAVEL
ASSISTANCE
The
New South Wales Film & TV Office provides assistance for filmmakers
to attend international festivals and markets. Festivals
Assistance is available for the producer, director or writer to travel
to an approved international festival with a completed film. The film
must have received prior investment from the FTO. In exceptional
circumstances, the FTO will consider applications from other
significant creatives, such as actors, editors or cinematographers.
Travel
assistance is available for feature films, television series,
telefeatures, documentaries and animation, and is in the form of a
grant. Markets
Producers with one or a slate of projects ready for financing can apply
for a travel loan to attend an international market such as Cannes,
MIP-TV or MIPCOM. Applications are assessed on: a project or slate of
projects developed sufficiently to attract market place finance, the
track record of the applicant, the expressed marketplace interest in
the project, a business and travel itinerary with a schedule of pre
arranged meetings. Travel assistance to markets is repayable to the
FTO. Applications are
accepted year round with the assessment process taking approximately
four to six weeks. For
details, email: devfin@fto.nsw.gov.au

GREAT MOMENTS IN HISTORY
Deadline
Monday
28 April
A brand
new initiative by the Australian Film Commission (AFC) and BigPond.
Great
Moments in History is a unique opportunity for animators and animation
directors with fresh, funny animation ideas to get them made and
exhibited on mobile phones, the internet and at an Australian film
festival.
We’re looking for ten 45-second to five-minute animations. The films
should…
…be humorous and/or satirical
…be fresh and distinctive
…depict, use, or portray historical moments (real, imagined, or
re-imagined)
…employ compelling visuals and dialogue/audio tracks
…contain a minimum of two characters.
Great
Moments in History animation can be made with any technique you wish.
Possibilities include CG, 2D, 3D, Flash, Traditional Cell, Machinima
(using license free engines and characters) or even stop motion.
All we want is for animators to create the best looking, best sounding
and most entertaining animation possible.
Oh,
and we want them to work well on a mobile phone. That means they have
to be easy to see on a small screen and easy to hear through an even
smaller speaker.
And we want them fast.
And we want them to be funny.
But that’s all. Guidelines and application forms can be obtained from
the AFC website at www.afc.gov.au

ABC Lateline Story on the 40% Producer Offset
The
ABC’s Lateline program highlighted the various arguments surrounding

The
Producer Offset Division is pleased to inform you that the application
for a final Certificate for the offset is now available to download
here on the web.
We have also made some structural changes to
the application for a provisional Certificate and would recommend that
you use this new version ("revised March 2008") for any future
applications.
We intend to put some further explanations of
the workings of the offset on the website from time to time to assist
you in better understanding the structure of the legislation and its
interpretation.
From time to time we may also make small adjustments to the application
forms and to the Guidelines as issues arise.
We
would welcome any feedback you may care to give us on the process (NOT
the legislation!) and its ease or difficulty, in order for us to assess
the success of the system we have initiated.
