| Welcome to Screenworks July E-newsletter!! July is an exciting month for Screenworks and its members. The nights may be getting cold, but things are heating up in Deacon Street. We're
about to launch our new website, and as always we have a busy line-up
of events, festivals and deadlines, so get your calendars ready. We
hope you enjoy what's happening this month - let's get started.

SCREENWORKS ON THE REGISTER OF CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS Have you ever marvelled at how much Screenworks achieves? Ever wondered how you can help… Well, here’s the answer- Screenworks is now accepting donations. Screenworks
is now on the Register of Cultural Organisations (ROCO) and is able to
accept tax deductible donations of money and property under the title Northern Rivers Screenworks Inc Donations Fund.
Donations to this fund will receive a receipt complying with the
subdivision 30-B of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. Donations
are unconditional and gratefully received. Please call Jill
Moonie, General Manager of Screenworks if you would like to donate to
this worthy cultural organization.
SCREENWORKS NEW WEBSITE GOES LIVE IN JULY! WILL YOU BE READY? Very
soon, Screenworks will be launching the new-look website. Apart from a
terrific new interface and improved functionality, the biggest change
for Screenworks members will be in the Directories.
The new site will have two Directories to promote our members' expertise: 1. Emerging Professionals- for those who are developing their skills 2. Professionals- for screen practitioners with higher level, credited experience
You must
be a current, paid-up member of Screenworks to be included in the new
Directory, so if you've been thinking about joining but haven't taken
the plunge, now's the time.
There will be exciting new
features in our Members Directory, including personalising your
profile, linking your page to YouTube, MySpace and Facebook. It will
also be very user friendly for those seeking crews and contacts.
Avoid disappointment and get ready! It's never too late to join. Forms can be downloaded in Membership News.

Bloodlines Screening in Activating Human Rights Film FestivalCynthia Connop's documentary Bloodlines will screen on the 5th of July AT 4:30PM as part of the Activating Human Rights Film Festival.
| The
story follows a remarkable emotional journey travelled by two women:
one the daughter of Holocaust survivors, the other the descendant
of a notorious Nazi war criminal.
Filmed in Bangalow, Berlin and the USA, Bloodlines features local artist Ruth Rich. Cinematographer Annie Benzie and filmmaker Richard Mordaunt are key contributors to Bloodlines.

dirtgirlworld Gets Up Visit the Website for more Information
|  | mememe productions' Cate McQuillan and Hewey Eustace announced this month that their animated children's series "dirtgirlworld" has been commissioned for 52 X 10-minute episodes by the ABC, BBC and CBC (Canada). Some may recall that Cate took away the 2005 "Life's A Pitch" laurels with this project. Screenworks member Aliison Kelly is on board as Producer's Assistant.
The Burning Season Premieres at Parliament House
 | Hatchling Productions' latest work had its premiere this month at Parliament House. The
feature-length documentary follows the quest of one man to stem the
tide of deforestation in Indonesia's rainforests. A one-hour version

There will also be a Sneak Preview of the film at 7:30PM on the Opening Night of the Activating Human Rights Film Festival at the Byron Bay Community Centre, 4 July. Seats are limited though, so book ahead.
Young FilmMakers Fund Recognizes Northern Rivers Talent: This year's round of the FTO's Young FilmMakers Fund sought applications exclusively from regional NSW. Congratulations to Rebecca Ingram and Sarah Ford, both of whose projects have been shortlisted.
Splendour Chosen for ARISTA Charlie
de Salis' feature script SPLENDOUR is gathering ever-increasing
momentum, with the news that it has been chosen as one of two projects
the AFC is sending to the residential Arista script development workshop in Victoria in July. Arista's aim is to deliver well-developed scripts to the market.
Lismore TAFE Graduate Lands Spielberg Job Anthony Guilbert, graduate of Lismore TAFE’s Short Film Production programme, recently landed a role in the art department on "The Pacific". The 10-parter HBO mini-series, filming in Melbourne, is produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks as a follow-up to Band of Brothers.
Guilbert
says his participation in the film course has taken him to the next
level as a filmmaker. ‘I entered the course as a visual artist and film
buff and left with the necessary skills and hands-on experience to
create my own films.’
North Coast Institute of TAFE, Lismore, is
now accepting applications for its Short Film Production course. The
course is taught by lecturers with strong professional backgrounds in

ReelDance Festival celebrates the point where dance and film meet,
showcasing the best of recent work from around the world and across the
country.

2008 program focuses on dance and movement in everyday life with styles
ranging from ballroom to flamenco and from hip hop to parkour. In
choosing this theme, the 2008 ReelDance Festival aims to represent
dance in all its forms and highlight how often it touches and enhances
our everyday lives. At the same time, the festival continues to
represent the best of dance as a performing art in the most recent and

RECENT EVENTS INTRODUCTION TO FINAL CUT PRO EDITING
| Andy Bambach's 2-day Introduction to
Final Cut Pro Seminar was a huge success, with the class fully-booked
and some participants bringing their own laptops in order to get a
place. The
weekend sessions at the Northern Rivers Conservatory of the Arts in
Lismore introduced basic principles of non-linear editing, the FCP
interface and key techniques such as footage capture, workspace and
file management, working in a timeline and audio editing. |  | For

Conservatorium is now inviting applications for the Certificate IV in

screening of Lawrence Johnston's epic mood piece "Night". Screenworks
members also enjoyed the opportunity for a Q&A with the Director on
the night, and again the next day as he screened more of his work, and

| ACTIVATING HUMAN RIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL JULY 4TH & 5TH - BYRON COMMUNITY & CULTURAL CENTRE A Visual Journey Towards Understanding and Empowerment How do we
activate human rights as a step towards achieving universal peace?
What’s an effective way to illuminate the great cross section of human
rights abuses that are taking place around the globe? How can we
provide real insights into real people’s lives? A picture is worth a thousand words….
With Screenworks member J'aimee Skippon-Volke at the helm as festival director, this
dynamic human rights film festival presents a positive pathway for
raising awareness of human rights abuses and the search for solutions.
The showcase of documentaries also features a screening of Mullumbimby-born Kim Mordaunt's "Bomb Harvest" in a lineup that will leave you moved, outraged and inspired.

NEW INTAKE FOR CERTIFICATE IV IN SCREEN The Northern Rivers Conservatorium
is seeking expressions of interest for students wishing to enroll in
the second semester (mid-year intake) for the Certificate IV in Screen.
With a focus on Documentary film making, editing on Final Cut
Pro and multi-camera live recording in second semester, the
course is taught by experienced screen porfessionals such as
Screenworks members Cynthia Connop, Andy Bambach and Leonie Dickinson.
Run on Mondays and Fridays between 10am and 5pm commencing 21st July,
the Screen course is fee paying and price will depend on the number of
enrolled students. It should be possible to complete the
Certificate IV in Screen by first Semester 2009

THE FILM ARTISTS COOPERATIVE Next Meeting: Thursday June 5 New members welcome!
The
Film Artists Cooperative (FAC), currently have their monthly meetings
from 7:30 to 10 pm on the 1st Thursday of each month at the meeting
rooms of the Byron Bay Services Club, Jonson Street, Byron Bay.
FAC is an independent, participant-run group of filmmakers and digital artists from the Northern Rivers community who are helping one another to achieve their film making goals. FAC always welcomes new members and everyone is encouraged to participate. Membership is free.
WOMEN IN BUSINESS REGIONAL PROGRAM
The Women in Business Regional Program has been developed to improve
the business skills of women who own or operate a small business in a
regional community and assist them to grow their business. The Program
is very practical and is designed to meet the needs of local
businesswomen. The program offers businesswomen a combination of:
Business skills training workshops; Opportunities to work with an
experienced business person, who will act as a mentor to small groups
of women on the program; and Networking events, where you will be able
to meet other businesswomen and representatives of local business
organisations. The program will be held in PORT MACQUARIE and will
run over a 3-month period. The cost of the full program is only $150.00

is commencing pre-production on a major film project in the coming
months. They are seeking an additional employee at their production
office in Mullumbimby. The position will be assistant to the

A DOCUMENTARY IN SEARCH OF A FILMMAKER Global
warming, peak oil and food affordability are international problems,
yet the answers may be in our backyard. Two middle-aged city folk
explore their capabilities of producing not only their own food, but
their own power and energy efficient home to eliminate their carbon
footprint. A lush valley 25km north of Kyogle, NSW, creates the
perfect setting for this optimistic, highly enthusiastic couple, with
some assistance from their five sons, to create a new lifestyle.
They haven’t done anything like it before - so no doubt there will be
laughter, tears, failures and triumphs as they fumble and learn
their way through. They want to show others if they can do this, anyone
can make a difference to their children’s and grandchildren’s

CALL FOR ENTRIES PLAY NOW ACT NOW CREATIVE COMPETITION DEADLINE: July 25 Play
Now Act Now is a film, graphic design and writing competition for young
people aged 16 to 25 in NSW. Play Now Act Now recognises that young
people do and will drink alcohol and use other drugs, and sets out to
minimise the harms associated with this. There are 3 main competition categories in the 2008 Competition: - Film/Video - Creative Writing - Graphic Design Finalists
will be selected primarily on content and the artist’s ability to
convey their story. Creativity, knowledge, insight and an opinion on
the topic will be vital. Finalists from each category will be showcased

EXPERIMENTA CALL FOR MEDIA ART PROPOSALS DEADLINE: 25 July Works to be completed by 1 May 2009. Experimenta
is calling for proposals from Australian artists to create media
artworks for the 2009 International Biennial of Media Art, titled
EXPERIMENTOPIA. EXPERIMENTOPIA
is the theme of Experimenta's next International Biennial of Media Arts
in 2009. Experimenta will be commissioning new works for up to $6,000
each to be included in our exhibition of exceptional Australian and
international media artworks. Successful proposals for the commissions
will respond to the exhibition theme, engage audiences, use technology
creatively, and can be audio/visual, installation, or object-based.

15TH WOW FILM FESTIVAL - A WORLD OF WOMEN'S CINEMA DEADLINE: July 30 WOW
Film Festival 2008 will screen 1st & 2nd October in Sydney, before
travelling to over twenty national locations and overseas. The early
bird call for entries is open now until May 30th, with the final
closing date for entries July 30th, 2008.
This is an exciting
opportunity for women filmmakers to showcase their work in an
established Festival that tours nationally. WOW particularly encourages
and supports women from diverse backgrounds to enter and is calling
emerging and established women filmmakers to again enter this year's
Festival.
Short
films up to 55 minutes, any genre with key creative input by women are
called to enter. To be eligible the film must have been made by a woman
Director;or women in any two of these roles: Producer, Writer, Editor,

THE REELIFE SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2008 DEADLINE: August 10 Reelife,
is an opportunity to showcase 'real' life experiences that affect young
people through contemporary use of film and video. If you are 25 or younger put your ideas into motion in a short film. All
genres and styles accepted: documentaries, dramas, comedies,
experimental films and animations. Prize categories will include Best
Film, Best documentary, Best Script, Best Under 18, and Audience

DigiSPAA ENTRIES NOW OPEN DEADLINE: 19TH September DigiSPAA is an initiative designed to encourage digital feature film production. Now
in its fourth year, DigiSPAA provides a forum for Australian and New
Zealand filmmakers to showcase their work in a competitive environment.
The winner, who will be
announced at the SPAA Conference in November 2008, will receive a cash
prize of $15,000 as well as $20,000 worth of post-production sponsored
by the Movie Network Channels, a subscription to Movie Network, and
return airfares and free registration to the prestigious Rotterdam
Cinemart International Feature Film Market. The winning entry will be
screened on the Movie Extra channel.

GREENFEST FILM FESTIVAL - ENTRIES NOW OPEN DEADLINE: 10 October Greenfest.com.au
is running a short film competition from now up til the screening dates
in October 2008.( Southbank Brisbane). They
are also looking for films made by "locals" in the region 200km radius
around Brisbane. The focus for Greenfest is to have fun celebrating the
times of change we are in. Bringing people together without prejudice
or cost to network and share ideas on our collective future strategies
without appealing to powers beyond ourselves or our region. If you have
a feature length or longer film
that shows a creative original or green theme, that evokes a spirit of
change and empowerment, this is the festival for you.

| FUNDING DEADLINES FOR SCREEN AUSTRALIA The Screen Australia Development Funding Programs will replace the AFC's Film Development programs from 1 July 2008.
Most of the new Screen Australia guidelines and application forms are now available.
The remaining guidelines and application forms will be available soon.

YOUTH PARTICIPATION GRANTS PROGRAM DEADLINE: July 25
YAPA's Youth Participation Grants Program gives young people the power
and resources to develop and implement community activities in their
local area.
If you are aged between 12 and 25 years, and living in NSW, you can
apply for a youth participation grant. You can apply for up to a

THE FOUNDATION FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS DEADLINE: September 2 Your
Eyes Only is a creative funding opportunity for young people 12 to 15
years to submit a creative entry that celebrates the strengths of their
community through their eyes. Applications will be judged by a
committee of young people aged 12 to 15 years from across Australia.
Successful entrants will nominate a community group working with young
people in their community (for example a school, youth group or
sporting group), to receive a donation of up to $3,000. This donation
would then be used by the community group to further its work by

ONGOING PROGRAMMES: ABORIGINAL HERITAGE PROJECTS Aboriginal
Heritage Projects provide grants of up to $75,000 to conserve
Aboriginal heritage and encourage greater understanding of Aboriginal
culture. The program assists in the conservation of culturally
significant Aboriginal sites, documents community events and
contributes to Aboriginal tourism. The aim is to sustain long-term
heritage benefits and create greater knowledge of Aboriginal traditions

ABC REGIONAL PRODUCTION FUND The
ABC Regional Production Fund commissions work form experienced radio
producers and talented content providers that live outside the major

NSW FTO DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE This
grant from the NSW Film and Television Office (FTO) is to assist
projects to reach the stage where they are ready to attract production
finance. Development assistance takes the form of an investment which
is repaid with interest when a project goes into production. Funding is
available for the following types of projects: feature films,
television series and telefeatures; documentaries; animation.
The FTO favours projects which show a commitment to quality, innovation
and potential commercial viability; provide a clear economic benefit to
NSW and its film community; are likely to be substantially produced in

NSW Film and Television Office supports and encourages the growth of
the film and television industry in NSW through the Regional Filming
Fund (RFF). It is an annual
fund that is available for filmmakers that intend to film at least one
week or more in any part of regional NSW. The level of assistance is
based on the total amount a production will expend in a regional area

TRAVEL ASSISTANCE The New South Wales Film & TV Office provides assistance for filmmakers to attend international festivals and markets. Festivals
Assistance is available for the producer, director or writer to travel
to an approved international festival with a completed film. The film
must have received prior investment from the FTO. In exceptional
circumstances, the FTO will consider applications from other
significant creatives, such as actors, editors or cinematographers.
Travel
assistance is available for feature films, television series,
telefeatures, documentaries and animation, and is in the form of a
grant. Markets
Producers with one or a slate of projects ready for financing can apply
for a travel loan to attend an international market such as Cannes,
MIP-TV or MIPCOM. Applications are assessed on: a project or slate of
projects developed sufficiently to attract market place finance, the
track record of the applicant, the expressed marketplace interest in
the project, a business and travel itinerary with a schedule of pre
arranged meetings. Travel assistance to markets is repayable to the

| NSW Film and Television Office Announces New "Film Friendly" Legislation Legislation
designed to make NSW more film friendly by cutting red tape and
improving access to locations has been approved by the State’s
Parliament. Arts Minister Frank Sartor said the legislation
followed other moves endorsed by Parliament this week supporting the
local entertainment industry.

SCREEN AUSTRALIA UPDATE - 20 June, 2008 Arts
Minister Peter Garrett announced the appointments for the first board
of the government’s new film agency, Screen Australia. Mr Garrett said the appointment of Mr Glen Boreham (Chair), Mr Ian Robertson (Deputy Chair), Ms Cherrie Bottger, Ms Rachel Perkins, Ms Deanne Weir, Mr Robert Connolly and Mr Greg Smith until 30 June 2011, opened a new chapter for Australian film and television with the commencement of Screen Australia from July 1.
“Screen Australia will help develop a more competitive screen production industry, which contributes more than $1.5 billion to the economy, while providing strong support for projects of national or cultural significance,” Mr Garrett said. Read the Minister's media release in full Here.
SPAA DATES ANNOUNCED! 12 - 14 November 2008 The
screen industry's premier business and networking event will be held on
Wednesday, 12 November to Friday 14 November at the Sheraton Mirage
Resort on the Gold Coast.
With the Producer Offset up and
running, producers are finding new ways to finance and cash flow their
productions across all genres. The Conference will focus on some of the
ways producers are adapting to the opportunities afforded them by the
new initiatives.
SPAA Executive Director Geoff Brown says of
this year's Conference, "For producers to thrive in this new financing
environment they need to be entrepreneurial and seek out ongoing
partnerships. A thorough understanding of what is now driving the
international marketplace will be examined as the conference presents a
number of case studies of high profile businesses that have managed
change and succeeded."
SPAA is the industry association for the
independent film and television industry, providing leadership and
direction on all debates concerning the economics, creative and
technological future of the screen production industries in Australia.
It strives to create the business conditions for the industry to
compete strongly in both local and overseas markets.

FILM FINANCE CORPORATION AUSTRALIA PRODUCER OFFSET GUIDELINES Amended
guidelines for the Producer Offset have been placed on the website
today. There are some small corrections and changes, but the principal
amendment relates to the wording for verification of distribution,
originally on page 29 in Section V – Provisional Certification Process.
The new wording is in the same Section, but is now entitled
