REEL TALK SERIES

'THE BLACK BALLOON'
Plus Q&A with films writer/director ELISSA DOWN
Jill Moonie, Elissa Down, Lyn McCarthyPeter Westheimer, Jenny CornishLucille & JanLyn McCarthy & SW's Members

Many thanks to everyone who came to the Northern Rivers premier screening of The Black Balloon. It was a very exciting turn out, with queues of patrons trailing out onto Jonson Street.

It was also fascinating to hear Elissa Down speak so honestly about her film and the parallels it had with her own life. Afterwards the cinema foyer was packed with everyone chatting and enjoying their champers!

Elissa said of her experience up here that she was moved by the support the film had generated, but commented in particular about one young man who came up to her afterwards and thanked her with tears in his eyes, saying "she must have written about his life growing up with his brother with Austism."

ReelTalk Series are an important Screenworks event, and an opportunity to raise financial support as Screenworks is a non-for-profit organisation. The power behind the Reel Talk Series is Screenworks departing Chairperson Lyn McCarthy, luckily Lyn will continue to be involved in Screenworks Reel Talk Series -  a big thanks to Lyn for all her work, support and energy.

Screenworks would also like to thank our sponsors: Belongil Terrace, Belongil Beach, Bangalow Coast Country Cellars, and most importantly our venue partner, Byron Cinemas. We wouldn't be able to make Reel Talk Series happen in Byron Shire if it wasn't for Byron Cinemas support - a big thank you to Rose, Glenys and Byron Cinema's Staff. We look forward to bringing you another exciting Australian film through ReelTalk Series soon.

ACHIEVEMENTS, AWARDS, ACCOLADES
Update from Screenworks Board Member Andy Bambach who recently received 15K development from Screenwest for his docudrama 'Turn Left White Man'. Andy is currently OS researching for the production.

Andy Bambach"Here is a picture of myself with two staff members (left to right) Tea Mayhew (Historian) and Nikja Mendes (Maritime History) who I interviewed at the Maritime and History Museum of Croatian Littoral in Rijeka, Croatia on the 1/4/08.

They showed me their original handwritten copy in Italian of the manuscript in three volumes, describing in great detail the amazing journey of the shipwrecked crew of the Barque Stefano on the Ningaloo coast of Western Australia in 1875 by the last two survivors Michael Baccich and Ivan Jurich who were rescued by Nomadic Abo
rigines (Baiyungu and the Buurabalayji Thalanyji) who they lived with for several months.   Set in a beautiful harsh coastal-desert backdrop, to the most incredible shipwreck survivor story, where the drama unfolds like a four part cliff-hanger feature film, told straight from the pages of two boys manuscript recollections.  Shipwreck survivors who tell of fear, survival, death and cannibalism.  Michael and Ivan wrote about the compassion of the Aboriginals who saved their lives many times over in what is the only first hand account of life in a nomadic Aboriginal tribe, adding important voices to the Western Australian cultural landscape."

- Thank you Andy, we look forward to further updates!

LOCAL NEWS

Northern Rivers Writers’ Centre under threat!
NRWC LogoYou may have been alarmed by media reports that state government funding to regional Writers’ Centres is under review and may cease. You do well to be alarmed: the reports are true and cessation of Arts NSW funding would threaten the very existence of the Northern Rivers Writers’ Centre and the Byron Bay Writers Festival.

If you believe your Writers’ Centre and your Byron Bay Writers Festival can be replaced by an online service, do nothing.
If you believe that we play a role in the creative life of the region and indeed on the national literary stage, if you believe that we develop an audience for writing and reading and stimulate thought, if you believe that people living in regional areas have a right to the professional development services and cultural experiences taken for granted by city dwellers, SPEAK UP NOW.

The NRWC is a not for profit incorporated association receiving core funding from Arts NSW. This funding represents less than ten percent of our total turnover but is an essential component of our sustainability.

In September 2007, NSW Minister for the Arts, The Hon Frank Sartor, commissioned an independent review of the Arts NSW Cultural Grants Program. The report has the overall endorsement of Mr Sartor. To read the report, click here NSW GOVT TO STRENGTHEN CULTURAL GRANTS PROGRAM. The review and the media release are available for download here. The section relevant to Writers’ Centres begins at the bottom of page 18.

The Northern Rivers Writers’ Centre has had no consultation as part of the review and is preparing a submission for the implementation group. Timing is acute: funding for our organisation must be acquitted and application made on an annual basis, due at the end of May.

Write now to the Director General of the Department of Arts Sport and Recreation, Ms Carol Mills at mail@arts.nsw.gov.au, putting Ms Mills’ name in the subject line. Your voice is essential.

SHORT COURSES

PAGE TO SCREEN
Date:  Saturday 24 May
Venue:  Veranda Room, Byron Bay Community Centre
Cost: $130 for Screenworks members, $150 for non members, student discount $130.
How does a director take a script from the black and white type of the printed page and turn it into a film that not only creates, in sound and image, a world as real as the world around us, but which also tells the story in a way that fully realises all the emotive and dramatic qualities of the screenplay?  The answer is, by a combination of creative vision and highly disciplined professional practise.

“Page to Screen” is a distillation of Charlie de Salis’ 15 years professional experience as a director working across television commercials, corporate promotions, short films (selected for 26 international festivals, including Venice and Cannes), television drama and documentary.  The course provides a creative and logistical toolkit for developing drama directors, taking the filmmaking process from the director’s first read of the script, to the creation of a vision for the film, then into pre production, production, and post production.  For more information, please contact Charlie de Salis at cdesalis@bigpond.net.au

SYDNEY TRAVELLING FILM FESTIVAL
BYRON BAY 30 MAY - 1 JUNE

Byron Shire audiences are in for a treat when the 2008 Sydney Travelling Film Festival rolls into town, screening 30 May – 1 June at the Byron Cinemas on Jonson Street. Delivering the best in world cinema to the NSW North Coast, this year’s program serves up stories from China, India, the Czech Republic, Italy and France. The festival opens with a home-grown treat; a special screening of the glorious Night; the latest big screen adventure from award-winning director Lawrence Johnston (Eternity).

An extraordinary cinema experience, Night is a celebration of Australia after sunset. Capturing the mystery, mood and magic of Australia after dark, Johnston’s film weaves images and stories from across the country with a lush and dramatic symphonic score from acclaimed composer Cezary Skubiszewski (The Book of Revelation, Two Hands). Voices from all walks of life cut across the aural and visual landscape to tell of their ‘affair’ with the night - the pleasure and pain, work and leisure, truth and fantasy. The result is mysterious, beautiful and universal.

Director Lawrence Johnston will be in Byron Bay to attend the screening of Night and will take questions from the audience. The film will be followed by opening night drinks in the cinema foyer to launch the 2008 program.

Information on session times and tickets is included in the enclosed program or online at www.sydneyfilmfestival.org/tff

ACTORS NEEDED
We are casting for many roles for our Inseparable Coil film. It is a film focused on melding high quality action with solid, realistic drama. Shot entirely digitally, the film will use a careful blend between the latest visual effects technologies and practical stunts and effects. For example, the gun fight scene will use practical weapons, stunts, and shattered glass, with a mix of steadicam footage which will be match moved to integrate digital bullet hits and wall explosions that would be either too costly or too dangerous to achieve otherwise.
All this technology is at the service of a carefully crafted storyline that focuses squarely on the principal characters. Casting the right actors is therefore paramount to the film's success.

 NATIONAL NEWS
$23 MILLION IN FILM/TELEVISION PRODUCTION COMING TO NEW SOUTH WALES
More than $23 million worth of film and television production has been kickstarted in New South Wales, as a result of investment decisions by the FTO Board.

The FTO has invested in the new feature film by Director, Shirley Barrett, and Producer, Marion Macgowan, the second series of both EAST WEST 101 and EAST OF EVERYTHING, plus five documentaries, including the new documentary by Bob Connolly (RATS IN THE RANKS, FIRST CONTACT).

“For every dollar invested by the FTO, more than $20 will be spent in New South Wales. This is a great boost for the NSW screen industry and to the NSW economy,” said Linda Tizard, Head of Development and Investment at the FTO.

EAST WEST 101 and EAST OF EVERYTHING, both acclaimed television series, will each begin production of a second series in NSW over the coming months. EAST WEST 101, produced by Steven Knapman and Kris Wylde, is set in the western Suburbs of Sydney. Writers are Kristen Dunphy, Michelle Offen and Michael Miller. Peter Andrikidis is confirmed to direct. Series two is the continuing story of Muslim Detective, Zane Malik, as he seeks to solve a bombing within a murky world of international intrigue, illegal immigration and local extremism.

EAST OF EVERYTHING, set in the mythical town of Broken Bay, will be filmed on location in Byron Bay in northern NSW. Producers are Fiona Eagger and Deb Cox; Writers are Deb Cox, Roger Monk and Max Dann. Stuart McDonald returns as Director. In series two, when Art (Richard Roxburgh) and Vance Watkins (Tom Long) re-open the door of the ramshackle resort they grew up in, they unwillingly invite the return of the free-spirited father who abandoned them - when their 'paradise' was spoiled.

AWG EXITS SCREEN COUNCIL

The news was broken when AWG executive director Jacqueline Woodman sent an email to members announcing the decision claiming that the ASC had fallen into financial mismanagement, apportioning much of this responsibility on the ADG.

The FFC wraps up 20 years of funding with a record number of investments

The Film Finance Corporation Australia (FFC) has finished its 2007/08 funding year with a record number of investments. The feature films, telemovies, mini-series and documentaries backed by the FFC in 2007/08 have a total production value of $310 million. This is the highest investment achieved by the FFC in its 20-year history.

Projects funded at the final FFC board meeting include films by two previous Cannes award winning directors: Shirley Barrett, winner of the Camera D'Or and Glendyn Ivin, winner of the Palme D'Or for his short film. Fred Schepisi returns to filmmaking in Australia after a twenty year absence and documentary director Bob Connolly after seven years.

"As we approach our final funding round after some 20 years of operation, we at the FFC look back with pride on the many memorable film, television and documentary projects in which we have invested to enrich the lives of Australians and to showcase Australia's creative film capabilities to the world.

I congratulate all our filmmakers on their achievements and thank all FFC employees, past and present, for their dedication and hard work.

We look forward with great confidence to the Australian film industry's future success under the new assistance arrangements that will be administered by Screen Australia from 1 July," said Graham Bradley, FFC Chairman.

SEMLER AND LESNIE TO HEADLINE ACS50

QUEENSLAND ON SHOW IN US BLOCKBUSTER, THE RUINS
The Queensland cast and crew involved in production of the DreamWorks/Spyglass thriller The Ruins can see the fruits of their labour when the feature film opens in Australian cinemas.

Produced by Hollywood funnyman Ben Stiller (Zoolander) and Chris Bender (The Butterfly Effect, American Pie) and shot entirely on location in Queensland during 2007, The Ruins has struck a chord with audiences worldwide and taken over $14 million at the box office since its US premiere on April 4.

Based on Scott Smith’s novel, The Ruins follows a group of holidaymakers whose decision to leave their plush Cancun hotel for an archaelogical dig at Mayan ruins in nearby jungle has terrifying consequences.

“Even though the story is set in Mexico, locals will recognise the Gold Coast’s Sheraton Mirage and beach vistas as well as Mt Tamborine and Springbrook National Park, which features prominently in The Ruins as the backdrop for the impressive Mayan temple set”.

The Ruins marks Hollywood powerhouse DreamWorks’ first commitment to film in Australia following years of relationship building between PFTC and studio executives.

DreamWorks producer Trish Hofmann said she was thrilled with the diversity of locations accessible in such close proximity to Warner Roadshow Studios.

“There is a fantastic crew base in Queensland, the studios have amazing, state-of-the-art stages for us to use and everything we need is within a 50km radius,” said Ms Hofmann.

The $25 million blockbuster employed 650 local crew and over 180 extras as well as 19 year old Brisbane actor Dimitri Baveas, who makes his screen debut alongside US actors Jonathon Tucker (100 Girls), Shawn Ashmore (X Men) and Jena Malone (Into the Wild).
